29 front bilge pump?

I have a 2000 29, and am wondering how the front bilge pump operates. It does not seem to operate off the switch on the dash. It does have a pump and a small box that appears to be some kind of sealed electronic device. Any help is appreciated.

most of the ones i have seen use a timer. the pump turns on every 5 or 10 mins and pumps for a sec. if there is resistance, water in the bilge, it will pump out the water. it works, but for long long periods it can run the battery down ( months).

Thanks Mike,

Is the switch a float style? Mine is just a square black box fastened down with two screws? If this is a switch do you know how it senses? Thanks
