Fountain 32 re-power options
Hey guys,
As you know, the 32 is a bit tight under the hatch and Im looking at changing my old 502 gen v's and putting new motors in. My question is will 496's or 525's fit under the hatch? I mean with the 502's i can barely fit anything between the two motors. I read that the 525's and 496's are a bit wider than the the 502's All help would be great. Thanks, Intimid8 |
I forgot to add, i fount a great deal on some 383's with 350hp.. how will those perform on this boat? they seem to be a couple hundred pounds lighter than the cast iron 502's i have
There a 32 in N.C.. with a pair of mercury 600 SCI so I guess the 525 will fit
Why on earth would you wanna remove 502's for 496's??? And small blocks, Do you want to keep it for forever...?
I certainly wouldn't repower just because of that, A inch or so is no big deal. The 525 from what I know is the 454 block with different internals. I would not down size to sbc's unless they were very stout.

My 502s are pushing twenty years of salt water use. The engines are tired and lousy.. I dont think I can rebuild them again. Im looking for newer more refined motors. Im happy with 70 to 75mph as long as it is reliable and a good value. I really am not a speed freak or gear head and don't want to be ordering parts every two months as its very expensive where I live.

Second the Ilmor 570's.
go with 525's or similar fuel injected 500-600hp range. That way everything will fit just fine, will be reliable and you won't have to worry about drives. that power will get you to 82-87mph. with 500efis 4000rpm is 60. For me 800's 3000rpm is 52mph 3500 61, 4000 72mph. It is a headache i am reminded of too often. If you do it put in new bilge pumps and get rid of water tank and diverters. Boat is quiet enough at idle.

Does anyone know if 496 ho's will fit?
Keep in mind you may have exhaust/ hatch clearance issues if you stray away from what you have w/o putting inserts in your hatch.
Has anyone seen or heard of 496 ho's on a 32?
Why do you want to go with the 496's so bad?
I would think they would look just like the 35EX that has them, the 32 just doesn't have as much room in front of the motors. BTW Other then the intake and header height, 525's are the same size as a 502. Does your 32 have the hatch insert? |
525's is my vote. Very nice motors and the boat would run very good! I don't know much about the 496's besides that they are not mod friendly with out internal upgrades so my research stopped at that since I like to modify.

Id be open to putting 502s back on it if I could find some. Im not a mod freak and from what I hear 496s run veru smoothly and are as fast if not faster than the stock 502s. 525s are a bit outta my price range
Hey john, we know where this gentleman can get 525's with whipples and bravo xr drives!!!!! Only problem is they sure were not reliable!!
I had stock 502s in a 29 which has the same engine bay size and it was tight. I dropped in a set of 500 efis with lightning headers and was amazed how much more of the bildge and engine bay we could see. changing plugs is easy as well as anything else . I can actually see my bilge pumps and could never see them with the 502s. lightened up the azz end now the boat sits at least 2 inches higher out of the water. overall a great alternative to the 502s plus better performance
cant believe im agreeing with a guy from Pittsburgh!
496 HO is very reliable and turn key in stock form. Plus a pair of very good used ones would be a lot cheaper that 500 or 525s.
I understand what you are trying to do. Your engines while great in there day are now tired and maybe even becoming less reliable. I think all three 496ho, 500 efi, and 525 efi are great choices and upgrades over what you have. The closed cooling of the 525 and 496 would interest me if I were you. Ive also never known of anyone having a whole lot of trouble with there 496. Maybe a little something here and there but that boating if you ask me. If you are serious about spending the money then do some homework and look for good deal in the classified's. Sometimes you get lucky and pick up a good pair of reliable engines.

There is a pair of 496 mag ho's in the swap shop now.
Why don't you just buy a 502 long block and put all your stuff on it? Wouldn't that be pretty cheap?
