Ok, I spoke to my mechanic and he confirmed that 500 hrs is pretty standard for a rebuild on the 525's. He said that I'd be looking at about 10K using existing blocks but highly recommended I flip for new blocks.

The difference in price on the build is about 4K each however he did say that a new block comes with a 1 year warranty plus my old blocks can be sold for $2500 (each if I understood him correctly) That said, bottom line would be an additional $3k out of pocket (if I had a taker for mine at $5k) to have engines rebuilt with new blocks.

Make sense to you guys?

If the cylinders are relatively clean and don't need to be bored and the blocks don't have any other issues I would run them.

It sounds crazy to me to replace the blocks! Unless there were cracks found!

Sounds to me he is weighing the cost of "new" short blocks fresh and ready to go against the labor of tearing down, hot tanking, and freshening the old ones. And he has a point, the old blocks will still pull some money, but you are gambling your total cost vs the price of used short blocks on the open market.

At 400 hrs your blocks should need anything more than rings, gaskets, bearings, oil pumps, freeze plugs, timing chain, and hone....pretty easy stuff for the average machine shop.

Have you scanned the engines to see where your hours fall in the RPM range?

Good point, there must be a reason for the reccomendation.....lots of good advice here! It's amazing......this foroum like any, makes you look at things from every angle so you ask the right questions....once educated on which questions to ask of course, allowing you the opportunity to explore all options.

With the cost of running these toys, it's nice to be able to put things out there for some great feedback!

Thank you

I'm sorry I'm not familiar with the term "scan your engine to see where your hours fall in the rpm range" I do know that WOT both engines are pushing 5200 rpm which is inline with the original performance report from Fountain direct.

Curious to better understand the term. Also thank you for the fountain of information!!!!

Its a print out that shows how many hours or minutes, the engines have been ran at varying RPM's.
