Had it out this weekend. The speedo is apparently already hooked up to the GPS. I just hadn't ever turned it on. It ran 75.8 to the limiters at 5300. So that is about 30% slip. Kind of a problem. Had it trimmed to about 4.5 on the indicators.

You've got 10mph missing...
|
I know. I'll find it. I always like a challenge.

What were you running for tab? |
you may have to space down another 1" for the 4 blades to work, or try some 5 blades P5x 29's would be a good place to start, did you have any throttle left at 5300?
|
Try maximus props first before you space anymore .
|
Tabs all the way up. No throttle left, but I when I opened it up it only took a few seconds to start beeping. So in other words if I were to keep it off the limiters I would have to back off a little.

My father had a 42, 525's, a/c, genny, all the BS. We tried everything. About 80 mph give or take a couple is all it had.
It seemed way under powered for that large of a boat. |
My 04' 525 boat is at 80-81 max with standard 32's, standard length. I could not get the slip down either.
I would try maximus props as well. Ran a set, and they have bite. I think labbed 30' maxes is what's reccomend for that setup. |
Do you have the boat?

Yes, I did buy it from someone here in Nebraska.

So far I have tried a set of 32 Lab max's, they were a little too big. I could turn those to 4900. I threw a blade off of my 32 bravo's. Now I have a set of Herring 31 6 blades to try out, but I haven't made it to the lake yet. For everyone's information the sportmasters that are on it are standard length.
|
Good luck on the props. Just picked up a 42 ex with 525s. It's got the 32 bravos on it.
You picked up a nice lightning! |
how do you like it compared to your slingshot?
|
You may be over triming , 3.5 is about max on the boats with high X Check the performance report for your boat. 30 maxs trim to 3.5 should bring the slip down MERCURY has a special part # for maxs to work on Fountains

Tried a set of 31 throttle up 6 blades. They worked better. Got me to 78 @ 4800. Then I tried som 30 throttle up 6 blades. They worked even better 82@ 5000. Getting closer.
I also got the performance report from fountain. It said it had 32 Maximus props, the x dimension is 22 1/2, and WOT was 90 @ 5350. It had no mention of the magic water they were running on though. |

This may be partial to the '08 38' that I'm used to running, but I've noticed something a bit non-conventional with the higher X, staggered late model Fountain. It seems they spin a lot of wheel and blade to keep the slip down, but that makes them a dog up top. The boat I run often, has 5 blades on it, and if you roll on it with neutral trim the boat will go 4900-5000 RPM like a slug, hit a wall and it's all said and done. To get the boat to make a good pass I have to roll on the throttles with above neutral trim, say 4-4.5 on these indicators and let it build RPM. As it begins to build speed up top I'll slowly bring it back in to around neutral and you'll feel the boat continue to pick up. It's a 5-8 MPH difference in the boat I run. I don't think the smaller motors (525 etc) have the torque they need to get the big wheels up and spinning when they're buried in that RPM range, but once past it they'll sustain the RPM while reducing slip as you trim back in. It's a weird practice I know, but I even mentioned it to RFIII and he said that was correct in practice. It's a far cry from running my old 38' side by side, just trim it and put it to the dash and eventually it's gonna do whatever it does... |
I'll have to try that and see if it makes any difference.

Had it out this weekend. Still getting better. The 30p throttle up 6 blades are working good. Ran 85 gps at the rev limiters 5300. It was nice and cool out with some slight wind chop.
