32 w/502's running warm
Need a little help here please. My buddy (who doesnt do computers too well) has a '98 32' Fountain w/stock 502s used to run in the 150 degree range for the past 2 years of ownership. this year he's is running 175-180. So, he had the impellers replaced, still 175-180. He came over to my dock, I pulled the hoses on the housing where i have seen impeller blades stuck, but she's totally clean. Fired the motors up with hoses off at this juncture, great water flow. this is a freshwater boat and has been since day one. Also has the original Gaffrig guages (could it possibly be these?). Any suggestions or other places to check are much appreciated. thanx in advance,

Are they 502 mag MPI ? were there any pieces missing from the impellers,
|
Did he ever suck up some sand that is stuck in the block?
|
They are 502 MAG MPI's and the old impellers were starting to disintegrate and supposedly they got the rubber out. As for sand, good possiblity, as we boat in some shallow waters. I will pull the plugs in the block and see what we find for sand. thanx again for the input,

you do have 160 thermostats,,175 does not seem too bad,,not sure you have a problem
|
I found rubber and small rocks in the oil cooler and ps cooler, PS cooler lay's horizontal on the back of the motor and the oil cooler is mounted vertical on the front right side of motor, good luck, fishin only sucks when the beer runs out.

@boatnt, thanx for the response. I wondered if maybe he had thermostats or not. He's concerned because he'd been 150-155 consistently for the last two years and now he's jumped up in temp 20-30. he was idling out our dock and i watched his guages wander from 150 to 180 then back down to 155 then back up, just idling, on both motors.
@33, thanx again for the input! I recognized the engine oil coolers standing vertically on the right side of the block but i did not pull the hose from the bottom side to inspect, i'll do that. i didn't know about the PS coolers on the back side, I'll make him climb back there to check those, haha, His boat...make him do some work :). LOL on the Fishin...but I'd rather mow my grass than fish! There's just somethin about people that are out on the water in a long sleeve flannel shirt, 90 degree day, a bucket of worms and a stick that i can't comprehend. Oh, and they have a real habit of waving with one finger....what's that all about??? Beer is good food!!! Thanx again everyone, much appreciated tom |

Great point US1! funny you mention that, as i was looking over the hoses at the thermostat housing, there 2 clamps on the supply line from the Oil Cooler on the housing. As it turns out, the dipwad that changed out his impellers (a suppose performance boat shop in Angola, IN) broke the clamp and just left it on there, with no clamp on the top of the oil cooler. I wonder how many more be broke or missing? thanx again,

I have the identical boat with the same power and my boat has always run at 175 - 180. I'm pretty sure that this is standard running temp. I have a couple of friends with the same setup in there boats and they are running the same temps also. I'm not sure why there would be a difference in temp from the first two years to now unless he didn't have thermostats or they were stuck open. Here is the test sheet from the factory on my boat. Notice it was 40 degrees out and it was running 170 and 160 at hot idle. I also did check my manual on the engine and they are 160* thermostats. Not sure there is a problem. Just my $.02

Very Helpful Simon, thank you! I'll give my buddy a call tonite and let him know. I believe he has the same data sheet with his boat, I will ask him to look and see what his temps were back in '98. much appreciated as usual,

Hmmm. I think I might do a top speed run down river once :lolhit:
|
That's funny I've never noticed that till now... From my experience of running my boat that number should be 70 MPH @ 4500. Reggie must have been a little hung over that morning!

Maybe the old Bravo Fever setting in?
Check the fitting where the inlet hose attaches at the transom (the 90 degree plastic one) pull that, and see if there is and corrosion on the transom plate that is restricting the inlet? |

The sounds like its working right to me guys. My 502 MPIs ran right those temps when I was running along at 3500 3800 or so and the thermostats open and closing pumps kicking in and out like they should. It really sounds about right to me. 160 to 190 depending on how hard your running. That's if they aren't heat exchanged like mine aren't. In other words sea water cooled. Mine hits 190 thermostat's open pumps kick in and down to 160 thermostats close back up to 190. My oil temps ran a steady 190 right on the button. I say ran at because I have two new motors now so Im not sure what they will run now. Either way that sea pump kicking in and out took a little getting use to for me. Bet this **** though. Let the thermostat not open and you will see a motor get hot faster then you have ever seen in your like. Those SOBs will hit 300 degrees faster than you can blink your eyes. I'm talking 160 to slam that gauge to the bottom on the hot side in 10 seconds if you running along on top. I bet you could melt one in 30 seconds. If your watching those pumps she will melt a motor before you even notice it. The alarm comes on and its too late.
