33ft Question's about speed and weight

First off what does a 1987 33ft weigh? In the ABOS blue book it says 7000lbs. for both the twin 330's and twin 420's, so with two 60gal fuel tanks (right?) full that would make it around 8000lbs, then you figure all the crap in the boat is about 500lbs I'm at 8500lbs

(75gal tanks sounds better than 60gal. So 150gal at 7.5lbs per gal brings it to 1125lbs of fuel!) That makes it 8725lbs!

My boat has 25pitch 3 blade Mirage's and pulls them to about 5100rpm witch is 70mph on the GPS Speedo?

So how do I get to the upper seventy's? I have a set of 23pitch mirage's I plan to try this weekend.

This boat was bought as a repo but I finally found the guy that orginally built it and he said it used to run 78mph with these motor's and props at 5400RPM? He could have been blowing smoke though!?! He also said this was with a full tank of gas and four people in the boat! He said it was on GPS but who knows?

What does everyone else have for power and what kind of speeds are getting?

BLOWN 1100 08-29-2002 08:43 PM

I have never had my 33 on the scales so i
can't help you on weight. Also my 10 Meter
has two 75 gal. tanks. Twin 1311 HP engines
for power.

Blown 1100, I tried to send you an email the other day, Were you at the Shoot-Out? Maybe I can by you that beer Next year!!

Thanks for the Gas Tank size!

Yes I was at the ShootOut but did not get to run. I put in
friday afternoon to check Old Red out and made a good pass.
On the way back to the dock at about 40 mph broke a drive,
naturally that ended my attempt at top V Bottom. Man I
was one dissipointed guy after working 6 weeks to get it
ready. I will take you up on the Beer offer, I thank I drank
more than my share while watching the races.

Who took the Top V this year? How fast did the Muscle Boat run?

Sorry about the Drive? What was it? SS3?

BLOWN 1100 08-31-2002 08:45 AM

The Muscle ran 105 and a 42 Scarrab ran106
Top V was a $4,200,000 55 ft. Callan with
4500 hp. They ran112 and i am sure
could have ran alot faster.
Yes the drives are #3's with 1.22 ratio.

I've weighed my '89- 33' with trailer and trailer by it self. The boat comes out to be about 9760#'s with 1/3 tanks and some b.s. in the boat. I tell people my boat weighs 9000#'s. I'll have to look at my literature again but I remember having 85 gal. tanks, maybe my lightning is different. If you want to do high 70's you'll need blowers on those 420's. I originally had 420's, now built 600HP (dynoed) 502's from scratch. I'm still messing with props but I'm at low 70's now on GPS. (at 1200 feet and 100 deg.) Maybe I could get high 70's at the ocean and down hill.

FunHome 09-06-2002 04:17 PM

Thanks BROKE, Dam these boat's are heavy!! No wonder reggie has Skater build his race boat's!!

I think my motor's are the orginal block's with some work done to them. right now we are getting 69mpg on GPS with 25 pitch mirages and 67mph with 23p mirages. The 23's seem to have better control and midrange punch.

What prop's are running?

BROKE 09-06-2002 04:46 PM

Last weekend I ran 26 Bravo's and I couldn't turn them so they went in to get reworked. After calculating, I think I will need 24-25's. Next weekend I will bring all my prop's for testing. I have reworked 25 bravos, 25 mirage, and some 24's. I'll let you know how it goes. On the old motors (420's) I tryed 24 and 25 Hydro's. Those are crap!, Actually the 25 mirages worked ok. I really don't totally care on top end since all my boating is really at 50 mph. With the 26 Bravo's I get 45@2900 and 52@3350 rpm. :)
From looking at your #'s you could probably massage your 25's. 69mph with a 25 couldn't be 5400?

FunHome 09-06-2002 05:05 PM

No your right it's about 5100

BROKE 09-06-2002 05:20 PM

If I remember the 420 redlines at 5400?
You could have your 25's reworked and I bet you would be at 71 mph.

Sorry to butt-in with a non Fountain.
The bottom of my 1984 Excalibur 31 is nearly the same (pad bottom notched transom).
Anyway I'm running worked 330s: bumped compression, bigger valves in the small port heads and some other crap. Merc trans- TRS. Props turning IN!
Running the 25 mirages at 5100 RPM I could hit 70 (GPS) in a nice chop with a light load.
This year I'm trying the 26 Bravo 1 4 blades.
Yesterday, conditions were just right and I managed to eek out 66.6 at 4600 RPM (GPS).
I really like the bravos for cruising and getting on plane, the 25 mirages would tend to blow out, getting on plane in rough water. My cruising speeds are pretty close to BROKE's (I really need to bring a pad and paper along and write that stuff down)
I am over propped, though. If I'm not getting any air, WOT is like 64 MPH at 4300RPM.
Neither props give me enough bow lift.
Anyway, I just thought I would share my results.

We wen't out again yesterday - about 90 degree's small chop, not many boat's on a small fresh water lake. Only two of us with a small cooler of (Water & Pop for after testing) but all the other regular junk still down below. I had the 23 pitch props on and got about 5300rpm's out of both motor's. To do this I had to trim it to the MOON!! It was finally getting pretty light but still under control. I think I have one trottle cable that must be in a bind or something because it won't go as far forward as the other.

During normal running I usually get up on plane and them trim out just a little bit from 0 to 1 1/2 on the indicator's, any more and it statrs to porpous to much. Keep in mind the Tab's are down when planning off then brought back up to about 4 or 5 with about 3 being netrual. Does this sound about right with how you guy's are running?

Oh yea, Prop's are turning in also.

Great thread!!

BROKE 09-09-2002 03:57 PM

This weekend comming up is when we are going out again. I'll have my 26's back in a couple of days. Meanwhile I put the 25's on to start with this time. I'll let you know.

I run my tabs at 3-3.25 (neutral) pretty much all the time. Actually for some reason the port side always needs to be lower by .5 it would need to get rougher than 2' to lower them to 4. The trim of course all the way in to plane (leaving the tabs) then depending on conditions anywhere from 3.5 to 5.5 cruising. sometimes like you say I'll get a porpus rithum, then I touch the trim to 3 it stops right a way then trim out again. For w.o.t. it should probably be out to 7-9 then tabs up... I don't because my wife is holding my infant in her arms, so tabs at 3 and drives at 4.5 is real smooth up to about 2' chop.
If I put the trim in to 3 it's like putting on the brakes. I actually lunge foward.

Anybody have a trailer for a 33 they want to sell? or trade?

Zanie 09-18-2002 07:42 AM

Sorry no dice on the trailer.
Saturday I brought along a pen and paper.
Zipping down a FLAT shipping channel (no current to speak of).
Running the 26 Bravo 1 4 blades.
It was near 80 F.
3 people, gas tanks less than half full
All speeds GPS:
RPM-----MPH
3000----44
3200----47
3600----52
4000----59
4500----66
I trimmed the crap out of it to get the 66 MPH!

Zanie,
Do you go to Air Marine for prop service? I had my 26 Bravo's worked back to 25 pitch. All they had to do was cut the tips back. The prop keeps its original shape.
Dan

Zanie 09-18-2002 10:09 AM

I am planning on bringing them to DAH in Burlington WI this winter. I was gonna have em remove some pitch and 'work em' for more speed.
We'll see how they do.
