Props turning in!

I just bought my first twin engine a few months back, it's a 29 fever and I noticed the props turn in and I have been told by several people that turning in will lift the boat out of the water better and increase speed and I have had a few tell me just the opposite. I found some talk about it on a few thread on here and it went both ways. So I guess my question is, which way will actually give you more speed turning in or turning out?

harleyrider 11-16-2014 09:07 PM

I was afraid it would be that way LOL, I was hoping to turn them out and pick up some MPH!

Crude Intentions 11-16-2014 09:15 PM

The old phrase "spin in to win".

Turning in lifts the bow and allows use of less trim so you keep the stern up too. For a lot of boats this translates to 1-2 mph. My Fountain rides very flat and easily carries the nose. It needs a LOT less trim to carry the nose than my old straight bottom 33 Baja did. Trade off is for many boats its a little squirrelier at speed and harder to maneuver at the docks. Most Fountain hulls have been designed for props turning in so they don't lose stability at speed. Essentially all stepped 42s, 38s and 35s turn in.

Mine is a 29 with twin HP 500's and it starts to chine at about 78.

Make sure your tabs are level, that normally is 3 on your indicators but check with a straight edge. On the 32's if you bring tabs above level they will chime walk but neutral they won't.

I don't see any speed gain when I bring them above neutral.

I have checked them with a level to the boat.

I have a 29 w/454s that spin labbed hydromotives inward and I could get 75+ on a calm day. But it got hairy. It was right on the EDGE. One day I flipped them to see. The handling improved slightly around the dock but with that beak catching even the slightest breeze...didn't matter much. The speed dropped and the RPMs came up. I switched them back to spin in. In the past I have run unlabbed hydromotives and lost 4-5 mph easy and the motors run harder. Back to labbed spinning in.

harleyrider 11-18-2014 05:23 AM

How much speed did you lose spinning out fordf360?

TGM 11-18-2014 05:23 PM

On my single my prop turns in as well.

Crude Intentions 11-18-2014 05:28 PM

TGM there is no in it out in a single. Only rh and lh. Most single fountains came lh when the avg boat was rh.

TGM 11-18-2014 05:33 PM

Well that's what I meant. I just called it spinning in. My buddy's 93 fountain is rh, I'm assuming it had something to do with stepped hulls. I have noticed mine has the most speed trimmed up to 6.5 while he doesn't have to trim his up as much.

Hey Harleyrider my 96 29 has twin 500 efis at 600hp each with 30 p labbed hydromotives. last run I made in october hit 94 and was banging the rev limiters. The difference with the chine walk is I put a set of modified 380 tabs on. It added about a foot more of tab at level keeps it stable at any speed plus the more seat time you have in your boat the easier it gets. The key is if it starts to chine walk just bump the tabs down to 5 then slowly bring it back to level as you accelerate. With that setup mine rarely chinewalks and if it does its corrected in no time. I dont have the stops on mine but 3 is level with the bottom, trim at about 5.5 to 6. Runs on rails at that speed never feel likes it getting out of control. If you could find a set of 380 plates it does make a difference! Oh by the way my props turn in

harleyrider 11-19-2014 06:19 AM

Thanks for that info tbrown!!!!!

With your labbed Hydro 30's, is the diameter the stock 15.5" or has the diameter been reduced?

tbrown15239 11-19-2014 11:50 AM

They are stock diameter 88 fountain I tried posting pics for Harleyrider of the 380 plates and how they are modified but it didnt work

88Fountain 11-21-2014 07:50 AM

I also have modified 380 tabs on mine, but it still chine walks terrible. Mine is a non-stepped hull given the vintage (1988). I am running stock diameter bravo 1's.

If I remember correctly, 3 mph that was with a handheld gps I never swapped it back to see with the garmin 740 Besides I swear I could just feel the difference.
