42 stagger questions.

Looking for new to me boats. I'm fairly sure it's going to be a fountain. I like the idea of a stagger boat. They seem to be more efficient and way easier to work on! Seems like a 38 side by side vs a 42 stagger is roughy the same speed power for power. So my first question is I would have to think that a 42 with bravos would have to be super hard on drives? Second question how much power would it take to make a 99-00 twin step run a solid 100-105? I have more questions but I'll start with those. Thanks guys.

Just so you know 2007 and up 35's were full staggard.

38's came in "half" staggard and then full staggard. I think the full started about 2006-07. Not sure.

indysupra 01-11-2015 05:12 PM

Yea I'm not looking that new so im looking for a 42 stagger.

I think you're going to need 700's and 6's to get that speed in a 42.

I doubt I could swing a 6 boat. Probably do scx or #4-5's

99 and 2000 were different bottoms I believe. 95-97 twin small step. 98-99 big steps. 2000-04 I think was 3rd gen steps. Then the 04 or 05 bottom was the latest and greatest.

A twin step stagger will need a minimum of 700 to get 100+. I've done some research and have decided I will likely end up with a bravo boat and do scx uppers and sc or scx lowers. Best cost vs reliability combo I think. The scx's are holding up to big power from what I've read

What year are you looking for?

I was all over the board but I truly want a twin step. Used to have to be a stagger but after being in my buddy's side by side 42 there is plenty of room in there to work on them. I think I'm gonna keep budget low and still vie for a twin step. So seems like 95-97 with the small steps. Prefer stagger but not turned off by side by side anymore due to what I've seen

There is a 97 side by side with 525sc's on boat trader

The small step boats were great. Very solid and great ride. It will take some hp to get those speeds though.

indysupra 01-11-2015 09:05 PM

I'm going to try and swing a 00-04 but want to have some money left over for drive upgrades shortly after I buy one so I would be ok with a 98-99

indysupra 01-12-2015 06:51 AM

Do most all of the 42's have the loaded out cabin?

Crude Intentions 01-12-2015 07:01 AM

The 42s cabins are all very similar. The glass windshield lightning having a vacuflush and the executioner/older lightning having a porta potty style head being the main difference.

Yeah I was figuring gonna need 8ish a side to reach 100 on small step. Maybe 850. I don't have any concrete info on that but just a general guess based on speeds I've seen overall.

I have a '98 Big Step 42 side by side, & love it, you get almost 2' more cockpit space vs a staggerd set up, there is plenty of room to work on the motors, still run 80 with 500 HP's , I have 700 N/A's now & runs 90 no problem , have not played with x-dim or props, (stock bravos & 32P Bravo 1 props) the boat does everything I need it to do

Another question is about where your're boating. A 42' is a lot of boat to trailer around - depending on your typical ramps / logistics. If you're on a lake, a 35' might be a good compromise. It's not hard to hit 100 in a 35' T/S and not beat up the drives too/as much.

We're going to start going to cumberland more and probably three/four times to Erie.
My friends 35 is a pain in the cack to work on. Almost as bad as my 31. Also a 35 fountain is almost the size of my scarab. If I'm going to go bigger I want to bump more than a foot or two.

indysupra 01-13-2015 06:01 PM

Anyone know or have any info on this boat??

Understood. I only go to Cumberland during poker run weekends, and it's a little sloppy for a 35' Fountain. A 42' works well there.

So you are running stock bravos on 700 NA in a 42? How are the drives holding up? Only reason I ask because I'm in a mind debate about what drives to put on my top gun. Message me if you'd like! Thanks. Sorry for thread jack
