Value of this 2002 Lightning 38?

I have been given the task of selling this boat for my company. I need to figure out its value. It has been sitting in climate controlled storage since 2007. These pictures were taken by me in 2008, the boat hasn't moved an inch in that time. It only has 70 hours on it.

The specs are as follows:

2002 Fountain Lightning 38. Twin staggered, supercharged, Mercruiser 575's. Boat is red with grey Fountain graphics and checkered flag. Stepped hull. Boat will do 95 mph. It is in excellent condition, with the only blemish being some chipped paint at the waterline. New South Florida Trailers triple axle trailer included. Boat is located in Hingham, MA.

This boat comes with three covers, a mooring cover, a cockpit cover, and a bimini top with enclosure... I think they call this top a 100 mph top.

The way it is positioned in the storage facility, limits my ability to get a very good angle for pictures, sorry.

It's worth $ 1500.00 with the trailer. Where do I send the check? Seriously though, check the classifieds for something similar. There's NADA for boats, too, but values there aren't considered totally trustworthy. Good luck and use your legs when moving all that snow.

Kinda curious because I have the same boat with the same power, keep us posted on what it sells for......but into today's market I am guessing it will be around $80k with that trailer.

BTW stock that boat will run 88 mph on a summer day, and 91 when it is 60 +/- degrees out, no more no less....trust me :D

payuppsucker 01-28-2015 04:28 PM

What all did you have to do to get yours into triple digits Ron?

I would of thought a little faster than that. 575 top guns run about the same speed, I figured the fountain would be a few clicks quicker

Full roller aggressive cam conversion, +2 mech advance timing, smaller pulleys to raise boost, 120 degree thermostats from 150 stock, hours of ECU tuning, and spin them to 5800 rpms. BTW it will only break 100 on cool to cold days, most days she runs 97-98

That is a real, verified GPS number in fresh water, when the boat had just a few hours on it from new. My test sheet shows 90 mph, so it was what I expected.

If you say so on the Gun, by my experience tells me otherwise. Keep in mind that boat and mine stock have standard lowers. Many guns with that package have -2

I only give real numbers, not the number of that one special day with props that take an hour to get on plane :D

4bus 01-28-2015 04:40 PM

Thinking my market analysis was way off......not a good time to be in the boat selling business.

I agree with you on the bullchit numbers on one very special day. Your right about the drives, its boxes with -2 lowers with a lot of those boats. I've never ridden in a 575 boat just going off my numbers. Mine with 525's runs 84-85 everyday in freshwater and always heard 575 boats ran 88. I actually wanted a boat with 575's but just couldn't find any at the time. To get mine to do what yours does I would need whipples, and I would bet would be double the cost of what you've have into your upgrades.

Someone's gonna get an almost new 2002 38, nice boat, Barn find

cig92 01-28-2015 06:05 PM

looks like a super nice boat, someone will do well if it is listed for a decent price. even if it has 70 hrs, i would still replace valve springs if it has been sitting that long. ron, i have a friend with an 02 top gun with about hrs with stock 575 and runs low 90's, they say it's one of the faster ones? it is for sale in the low 100's too if anyone is looking. spotless clean

cig92 01-28-2015 06:06 PM

120-140 hrs i believe

BostonFJ40 01-28-2015 06:08 PM

Would $75K be a reasonable asking price?

payuppsucker 01-28-2015 06:39 PM

Not in today's market, unless you're working on commission. If so, ask away. More like $60-$65 IMO.

F-2 Speedy 01-28-2015 06:55 PM

Hey J40, start high you can always come down, a 70hr unmolested 2002 is pretty rare, hopefully you don't have to dump it right away and can hold out for that guy in the spring, JMO

Yea, no rush, the owner just asked me to get it sold. He just bought a new 911 turbo, so he isn't exactly hurting for cash. No commission is being paid to me.

flying J 01-28-2015 07:12 PM

Sent you a PM I'll be out the way and I'd like to take a look

bildgebreaker 01-28-2015 08:20 PM

When 80K or less buys a 42 staggered with SCI's ready to go 70k is not at all realistic To put a value on it one would have to know if your going to spend the money and time to get it sorted and turn key. That could be a big undertaking after sitting for 8 years.

That's why I priced it as such, Could be lots to do depending...........................

It's a saltwater boat. Was the cooling system flushed when they put it in the barn eight years ago? Was anything flushed? What about the fuel system? Will you have to replace the tanks and everything downstream? Yea it's been in a climate controlled shop but was it heated for eight years without fault? Look at the corrosion on those 70 hr drives and the trim tab actuators. What about the paint blisters? Eight years is a while for a boat to go untouched and expect it to be like it was when you took off the bridle. I'm a buyer at $60k with the realization I could easily spend $15 making it the kind of boat it appears to be. Are you a buyer at $75-80k willing to do the same? That's what I based my price on and that's realistic unless you like being upside down in sh!t.

jmoore1225 01-29-2015 02:06 AM

Exactly were all the proper steps taken to store it? You don't know w/ out going to look at it, telling a guy to start @ a fire sale price of $60k is a joke.

BostonFJ40 01-29-2015 05:26 AM

It was properly put away. The cooling system was flushed. The fuel system had a stabilizer added to it. It is stored in a high-end toy storage facility, not in grandpa's barn.

HyFive578 01-29-2015 06:42 AM

This boat will definitely need some work to get it back in business after sitting idle for that many years. I would start at a reasonable market level price based on comparable boats and see where that takes you. You can always go lower..

Brandonb_05 01-29-2015 06:52 AM

" I will make him a offer he can't refuse" good looking boat, from the pictures.

Me too!!! [email protected]

j21black 01-29-2015 12:46 PM

Why not wait until spring, have it pulled out, blow the cob web's out of it and make sure everything is in working order before deciding on a price?

It could make make a difference of a few thousand one way or the other...

If he is not hurting for money, he could always just sign the title over to me and lose the storage payment...

payuppsucker 01-29-2015 01:03 PM

I can assure you after sitting eight years this boat will need a hell of a lot more than "having the cobwebs blown out of it".

Carbon Footprint 01-29-2015 11:38 PM

It's worth what someone is willing to pay for it. It is a staggered 38' lightning with 575s and LOW hours.......very desirable boat.
With the price of gas down and Obama's economy growing at a record pace (hahahahaha) I think there will be a lot more buyers this spring than there has been in a while.
Yes I know there are a lot of good deals out there right now, but we don't know all of the details on THOSE boats either do we?

Good luck with the sale, nice boat! I'd touch up the paint, get the engines started, and start at $95K if it was me. just sayin

And I'll be buying them all for a 1/4 of the price when gas hits $5 a gal in July lol

Sweet ride! Good luck with the sale!

BostonFJ40 01-30-2015 11:48 AM

I just updated the OP with more info on the included covers.

abmotorman 01-30-2015 04:54 PM

If I were to "blow the cobwebs out" I would drain all the fuel, oil, if not closed cooling system change thermostat, Impeller and definitely, prime the oil pump before turning the key! All oil has definitely drained off critical surfaces. I wouldn't run the engines over 3k without changing the valve springs since they probably have a very bad memory by now. A lifter may not come back either. Nothing is worse than sitting for any mechanical equipment.

38 X 01-30-2015 10:19 PM

Charitable donations of boats is gladly welcome for our shop! Can have the kids learn how to go thru the motors checking them out making sure everything's ok since its been sitting! Lol
