How did fountain win so many offshore championships with their pad bottom against "deep vees"? Must have been 1ft chop in all those races. :lolhit:

Photoshop! Lol

Mild,
Everyone knows that you don't know a thing about running in lake MI with a pad bottom against a straight V hull. Get back to the engine threads you are just a gravel hauler!

Hi Guys,

New to the site, so first post and looking for advice of any kinds on the fountain 29. I am not new to boating but it has been some time since I have had anything bigger than an 18 footer, Most of my boating is in lake Michigan and putting up and down the river. I am really drawn to the fountain 29 for several reason, I like the single motor aspect and it seems perfect size to go out and raise some hell for the day without needing 3 jobs to pay for fuel. I have gotten a lot of free advice and most is all bad on the fountain 29, mostly from dealers selling something else, so any advice out there on pros and cons of this model? Would really like to hear from guys that own or have owned this model, Thanks in advance and obviously I am looking for one, so if you know of a good one, I am in. Again, bring on the bad as well as the good on this model

The 29' single is a great boat. I've had mine for 14 years.

Yes, when it gets rough, the scarab 3's, scarab 2's, and even scarab 1's blow past me. Its not even worth going out anymore. I my speedmaster drive equipped fountain, simply cant hang with those trs and bravo "deep vee" true offshore hulls. Those 17 and 18 inch cleavers are no match for the mirage plus when it comes to big water

In my experience, pad bottom boats don't ride significantly rougher than true v's if driven/landed correctly. I've had the sh!t beat out of me at LOTO in a true vee and a sweet-a$$ ride on a pad bottom in similar-sized boats in similar conditions. Some guys give the impression the pad is the size of a 4' x 8' sheet of plywood...

Generally it's driver error. Fountains don't "crush". Get them on top. You're not cutting seas with the last 3 ft of your hull.

Kind of figured you would have the answer, you seem to know everything

Kind of funny how you guys ALL wrote me off on the rear engine mounts sagging causing the engine coupler to go out even though the alignment tool showed that it was aligned.
Guess what I was right.
But of course you guys know everything.

As you said earlier. Better driver, willing to put everything on the line, balls to the wall.

I have driven a lot of other boats than MY OWN.

Just givin you a hard time. You did post in the "Fountain" section, and make a false statement, that a Fountain, will be slower in anything more than 2ft. That simply is not true.

I had two 40' Deep vee's before my 38 Fountain. They were indeed heavier, longer, and rode softer in big water, at the lower speeds (50-70mph). I have boated for years with friends who have 38 Cigarettes. There has never been a time, I have ran with them for the day, where I was way in the back getting my butt kicked, while they were miles ahead sipping martinis. Thats internet folklore talk. The reality is, Im right there next to them, having a good time. My buddy's 38 Cig's that had TRS or SSM 3 drives, with the props buried deep, did not have to throttle nearly as much, as mine or my buddys #4 SSM 38 cigarette with high propshaft height. His props are coming out of the water all the time , deep vee or not. I've been on those boats, 39 cat, 47 outerlimits, and so on, out on Lake Michigan. Each boat is different.

Anyhow, my Advice to the OP, would be, try to swing a larger boat, IF the majority of your boating, will be on Lake Michigan. I personally, wouldnt go smaller than a 35 Fountain/10 meter for boating here. We do get some nice calm days, but more often than not, its choppy water, and sometimes, downright big water. A 29 Fountain, is a big boat for a Single. Fountains aren't the paperweights people think they are, and can be pretty heavy. That, and rough water, is gonna be hard on the drive. As well as the ride will be hard, and that goes for most boats under 30ft. At the end of the day, length is what you want.

I have some friends with smaller offshore boats, and while they do get out there , it can become "not fun" really quick when its rough. A twin engine combo, like say a pair of 454 mags, 502 mags, 496 mags, in a 35 Fountain, won't be horrible on fuel. It will have a better ride, easier on drives, more room, and simply allow you more time on the water comfortably.
