Oil drain kit for 575sci
 
While my 575sci are out of the boat, has anyone installed a oil drain kit similar to this http://www.overtons.com/modperl/prod...ls.cgi?i=26163 on a pair of 575sci for easy oil changes? Can it be done ?
pros and cons ?

My personal opinion, I hate them. 1 small rubber hose to fail and drain all the oil out your engine unknowingly while running.

Love them. I had them on my 496HOs, and it's the only way to go. Previous to that, I installed one on my HP500EFI. There are only two thread sizes; and Mercury actually sells two different kits as such. I don't remember specifics, but I bought both, and returned the one.

What I like to do is pin the bitter end of the drain hose up with a carabiner toward the front of the engine, away from the belts/pulleys, but high enough that you can always keep an eye on it. There is no pressure in the bottom of the pan, so it's not going to burst anything. As long as you don't have any sharp/rough/unfinished edges of fiberglass or metal around where the tube will be routing, you will be fine.

...I don't like the idea of them being permanently attached to the drain plug so you can never see the tail end.
Keep it pinned up high as I describe. When you are ready to change oil. just fish a coat hanger up through the bilge drain, attach the end of the tail end, and fish it back out the drain plug. I've done this for 15 years with never an issue.

I installed one on my 525SC in my Pantera and they were already installed on the engines in my AT. They work great and never had any issues. I also have mine pinned up on the transom and not just banging around in the bilge.

Check your thread size. I believe you need the metric threaded ones.

I love mine. The drain plug is attached to the transome drain plug. Makes it easy and clean to change oil while on the trailer.

It's the best way to change oil too. Just pull the drains when you come home after a trip out, while the oil is still warm and dirt is still suspended.
Come back the next day, and finish your oil change.
Just remember, if you have inverted oil filters (with anti-drain back valves), poke a hole in them so they drain into the pan and out the drain tube as well.

Love the oil drain hose. I use a zip tie to keep the hose up high. Besides draining oil while on trailer by running hose through the hull, I also use while on the lift or in the water. Just connect the hose to a Jabsco type pump & bucket and pump it out. FI'll with new oil, replace filter and head back out.

I ran mine up to a block that has them and my flush connections on it. I use a 12v pump with a quick disconnect and just punch a hole in top of filter and then hook pump up.

Oil now stays clean and is so easy to change.

And please, no comments on if Fountain specific oil drain hoses need to be longer or shorter that other boats. Some folks are sensitive! :D

All the newer Merc chit has the drain hose, most connected to allow you to pull it thru the drain plug to drain oil while on the trailer. Pretty sim[le here folks, leave the drain hose in the bilge and use it there. Mine have been just that way for almost a decade now.

Im trying to get a link, your first post is a 1/2 20 thread, pretty sure most of the Mercury pans are metric, my engines are on the stands so Im gonna pull a plug and check it

That oil with dirt is still in the bearings :) I start mine the same day with fresh oil. I think it's better to have the motor warm when you start it up. And then the new oil flushes out the oil in the bearings. I use new oil on the filter gasket too . Not the old oil. I m kinda weird. You only have to loosen the oil filter

I have them for all Merc drain pans. 39 bucks shipped to your door. It is best to not leave them hooked to your hull drain plug and better to keep them off the bottom / bilge.

This started about 2001 for Merc as a standard install but for the past 3 years they stopped that and now is an added option. I can go into more detail later why you should tie wrap or clamp it up plus off to the side in plain visual view along with keeping it away from rotating and heat systems.

Keep in mind its a brass female and brass plug at the end of the drain hose. the female portion is not that stout and easily hairline cracked if you torque its drain plug end too tight also as your hull drain plugs hangs down swaying all over place while towing your boat that keeps pulling on the end of the oil drain hose... Also the hull drain plug swaying as you tow your boat, bangs the exterior transom or bottom area of the hull. Just a few of the negs leaving it hooked to the drain plug. Leaving your drain plug in (tighten) all the time 100 % in most cases is not an option unless marina water stored or lake house over the water stored.. There is more as well.
