38EC -- lost power to 12v panel
2006 38EC, everything was fine yesterday until I used the windlass to pull the anchor up. Windlass got tangled, had to work on it for a bit, when I got back to the helm the GPS had no power. Got back to the dock to find that the 12v panel has no power. That panel gets its power from a "cabin power" switch on the dash. I played with the switch a couple times and got the LH bank of 12v breakers to get power. Still nothing on the RH side. When I throw the cabin power switch, I can hear a clunking behind the panel. I don't think that noise happened before. The marina that serviced the boat for the PO said that they had some issues with relays behind those panels.
Does anybody know if those relays control 1 panel, or 1 leg, or both panels, or ..? Anybody have a link or part number for these? Didn't have time to look back there, would like some info if anybody is familiar with this issue. Thanks. |

What do they do, exactly? I'm curious why I lost 1 out of 4 legs in the panel but there are only 2 relays. Just curious how it all works. Maybe it will make sense when I look back there. |
there is one for each bank . I think if you take the speaker out you can see them if you look down

The relays are similar to the ones on my 66 mustang. I would think they are marinized, but not sure. Before you replace the relays, remove the main power lines and check the connection between the red wires from the battery and the wire connector to the relay. Mine were lose, the wire pulled out from the connector which remained securely bolted to the relay. I removed the wire end, re-attached to the wire and squeezed the crap out of it. Worked perfectly from then on. I really need to go back and solder the wire end to the wire. 1 relay for each side of the 12 volt panel. If the relay is 'klunking" is it probably working. I would have thought Fountain would have done a better job attached the wire end fitting to the wire, but you know how that goes. Overall, still love the boat. It also keeps me busy solving issues like this. Good luck.

Since the only way I could identify this mysterious relay was to take one out, I figured I'd post it for future reference. Here it is:
They are a bit of a p.i.a. to change, but worth carrying a spare. |
