Speed /Setup question
96 35' Lightning (single step) Bravo XZs, no boxes, approx 700-750HP. What's realistic performance to expect? Same boat add Stellings boxes?
|
Many variables but that should if set up right get close or into triple digits. 525s have these in the upper 80s. In a lot of reading and people posting speeds/setups the boxes don’t seem to do anything positive. Seemingly either no gain or negative. Tough to tell though as very few people have done that as the only mod. |
I started my winter project! I removed the motors & drives. I'm leaning towards removing the Stellings boxes.
I'm running stock Bravo lower cases (with upgraded internals). I had tried a couple of different props and was seeing around 17% slip which seemed to get worse over 80mph! The boxes are set on the highest setting. When the boxes were installed there were 1" spacers added underneath the rear bellhousing mounts to raise the back of the motors? Is this something that is normally done? Was the stock X dimension on the 96 Lightning (without boxes) at a good height or should I change it before mounting the transom assemblies back less boxes? |
The spacers were there to lessen the angle on the u joints, all the stellings boxes I’ve dealt with have been in the middle hole and it has been said that the highest position is tough on u joints, ( thus the use of the spacers)most likely, the front mounts have been raised also, your exhaust outlets we’re probably cut with the engine at this height, assuming this was installed when built, so these are other things to take into consideration, where are the prop shafts at related to the bottom of the boat?( height wise) |
I'll measure it?
|
With the notched transom, where do I take the measurement? From the V in front of the drives or the flat of the notch?
|
removing the boxes will increase your slip numbers. With the boxes the props are farther back in cleaner water. I would keep the boxes and just adjust the boxes and drives down one notch.
For prop shaft height measure from the side of the V in front of the notch. NOT from the bottom of the V |
Looks like without the box it would be apprx 16.5" X . Should have boxes off tonight and can measure transom more accurately. If I have to do a little glass work and redrill its not a big deal, I'vw done it before. I just need to know the optimal height to rerigg. without boxes.

Does anyone know the ideal X-dimension for a single step 35 with 700-800hp. A good balance between top speed and good cruise speed? |
I have a 16 3/8 X dimension. Deep as hell. Buddy with a 2007 single step (same hull) has a 19 3/4 and we think he’s a little too high. While not definitive and it’s always trial error I’m gonna use a -3 and a spacer and shoot for 19 (effective X). Seems to be about the right height without being too high. |
