tow vehicle for a 42
 

I am planning on making the switch back to the dark side and pick up a 42. I currenly have a F250 4x4 swb CC with a 4 inch lift. It pulls my cat just fine, but a 42 lightning?

I am also considering a f350 dually, and want to know if I should go 4x2 or 4x4.

I PULL ME 42 WITH A 2004 GMC CREW CAB DURAMAX DAULLY 4X4.THE 4X4 IS NOT USED BUT IT MAKE ME FEEL BETTER . I PULL ALL OVER THE SOUTHEAST AND DON'T EVEN KNOW MY FOUNTAINS BEHIND ME .

I have a 35 and am considering moving up to a 38 or 42.

I pull my 38 with a 02 F-350 Dually 2wd. The truck doesn't care that the boat is back there and traction at the ramp has never been an issue. I have also moved it around some with my 95 Sub. but that is a little scary with the braking and not something that I would want to do often.

I was wondering about the traction at the ramp and needing the 4x4. I only needed it once, last week the rain started just as we were pulling out. I am not sure if I would have made it without the extra traction. One of those things, when you need it, you need it.

SPEND THE EXTRA $ BUY A 4X4

I pull a 10-meter with a F350 dually, 7.3L power stroke, and 6-spd manual tranny. What makes this setup interesting is that it has enough spare gonads to sit a 8.5' Lance camper package in the bed of the truck. Total gvwr with truck, boat and camper is probably 20k lbs. Can tow most of the way between Mich and Lake Cumberland, KY with the cruise control on.

I prefer a manual trans just to eliminate any overheating possibilities at freeway speeds with an automatic. As long as you don't do anything crazy like smoke the clutch at a ramp, manual trans works well. With the granny 1st gear, you'd rip the trailer from under the boat before the clutch ever complained. This=gas pedal not needed at the ramp.

Ford has a new 6.0L power stroke that has even more HP and torque than the older 7.3. A buddy at work just picked one of these up it's got some pep! Smaller pistons make it much more quiet.

Mine is also a 4x4. On rare occasion, I've had to use it on a slippery ramp in the rain. Murphy's Law says that one time you need it, the only guy around with a truck big enough to help you out will have a big red #1 in his back window. ;^)

We towed our 42 with a V10 4x4 Excursion to NY and back twice and she did fine.
