47 Lightning & Sport Crusier
Would one of you lucky individuals with either of the above boats please let me know the total length of the boat sitting on it's trailer and how high a door you need to get the boat into a special built garage. I have dreams one day of owning one and will be building soon. Plus, if you pull it, what do you use? Would a 2500HD Duramax+Alison do the job, (just around town not XC).

Re: 47 Lightning & Sport Crusier
I have a Lightning. The doors to my building are 12x12. I think it may squeek through 10x10 but the 12x12 is a comfortable fit to back it in.
I pull it with a Ford F-350 dually with the diesel. It's OK but if I don't sell the boat, I'm going to convert it to a gooseneck. It will handle much better. |
Re: 47 Lightning & Sport Crusier
Thanks Innthered;
How long is the boat trailer combination that you have? I'm guessing 55' overall? |
Re: 47 Lightning & Sport Crusier
Just under 50'. I do not have a drive guard on the trailer. My building is 59' (inside dimension) long. I back the truck in until the tires hit the apron (even with the outside edge of the building). This gives me 3' between the door and hitch and about 5'-5" between the wall and back of the boat.
I built a 45x60x13 pole building with two 12x12 OH doors. I can't believe I still would like more room! My buddy is going to keep his 42 Fountain in with my 47. I still want room to park my plow truck and wash and work on other vehicles. It will be a little tight. My house has a 20x26 garage that my dually has to park in at an angle to fit and a lower garage 26x20 that my wife parks her car in. I have over 3700 sq ft of garage space (my house is only 1350 sq ft per floor!) and I want more!!! I guess I'm a space freak. What I'm trying to tell you is build as big as you can afford (and the law allows) because you can never have enough! |
Re: 47 Lightning & Sport Crusier
Thank you so very much. You have what I would have had had we stayed on Cayuga Lake. Now we are on a canal in Cape Coral. I am having my Garage designed by my sister/arch, to fit on the lot and still have some sort of house. I told her I need 12' wide, 78' long, and 14' high, with 2 ton overhead trolley crane, to stack trailers and to pull engines/trans as wrenching on motors is my hobby. I am hopful that 14' high is enough overhead to be able to pull engines over top of transom (is the top of the back of the transom about 6' above the floor when on the trailer?) From Fountain website, I get the weight at about 18,700# full of fuel and gear, is this about right, (I have to build a hoist and was thinking of a 20,000#, but I want lots of safety factor.) All of this before I even buy one.....I like speed, but I want the smoothest ride (length and weight on a 24 degree should do that) as we venture into the Gulf of Mexico..Cape Coral to Sarasota to Key West that is why I think the 47 is the one for me. (currently have an older 29 twin, it measures about like the new 32' not including the added swim platform.)

Re: 47 Lightning & Sport Crusier
88Fout33 if you have a radar arch you should have more height. I have a 42 lighting race boat and need at least 16' to pull the engines, Innthered is right the most you can build the better. Bill Mazzoni ( Team Taboo)

Re: 47 Lightning & Sport Crusier
It measures 7'-3" from floor to top of rail at the transom. I think the Lightning weighs 13,000 lbs dry. Add a couple thousand if tanks are full and all gear is aboard and I think 15,000 would be max.
My boat is for sale - buy it and then build the building to fit!! |

We have a 47SC (for sale). Don't know about the height but it has the arch. Lenght on a trailer is about 50'. We pull it with a 2004 3500 GMC diesel dually. Dry weight for the SC is 14,300. Then add trailer, fuel, water, stuff and it gets really heavy, really quickly. Don't think a 2500 would do it.
See it in the OSO classifeds or on boattraderonline.com. Good luck. |
Re: 47 Lightning & Sport Crusier
Most lifts have a fudge factor in them already. If you buy a 20,000# lift, it will pick up around 21000#-22000#. I sell lifts in Missouri. If you have any questions when you get down to it, e-mail me and I can tell you about the price on what a dealer will take and not. There is a lot of profit on a 20000# lift and not a lot of competition. Good for the dealer, not for you! [email protected]
