Info for FMO New Years Day Fun Run to Marco Island - Tues. Jan 1, 2013
Info for FMO New Years Day Fun Run to Marco Island - Tues. Jan 1, 2013
Our 7th annual New Years Day Fun Run to Marco Island, FL will be on New Years Day, Jan 1st, 2013. ( re scheduled from Saturday due to weather ) We will start from the south side of the Sanibel Bridge at 11:30 AM. Lunch will be at C.J’s on the Bay in the Esplanade complex.
If you are able to join us, post up here or let me know by phone: 239-776-0481, or e mail: [email protected]
The run is free and open to all paid up FMO members with offshore boats capable of a safe 50 MPH min. cruising speed. We need to know who all is coming, so C.J’s and the dock master can be prepared for us. If you have friends wanting to join the club and do the run, they can join by going to www.ftmyersoffshore.org Sign up is quick and easy online or the form can be downloaded and mailed in.
Bob
Membership renewal: Please be mindful that if you have not renewed your membership for 2013, now would be a good time to do so. Please go to our website at www.ftmyersoffshore.org and complete the online form or download and mail it in. As well, we will have membership forms available at our lunch stop. Please note that to participate in FMO events your boat must be insured and your insurance information provided to us.
Route: From the Sanibel Bridge we will start behind the Nor Tech Team PREDATOR pace boat on a coarse that will take us to Bonita Beach. From there we will run down the coast, past Naples stopping to re group at the Naples pier. Once the back of the pack has caught up we will then run together the last 10 miles to Big Marco Pass and into the Marco River. A half mile into the Marco River, turn right into the first canal (before Snook Inn) making our way in the marked channel to C.J.s on the Bay at the Esplanade Marina.
Fuel / Distance: The distance from the Sanibel Bridge to Marco Island is about 45 miles each way. All boats are urged to leave with full fuel, particularly if you use high octane fuel that is hard to get. 89 octane fuel is available at club sponsor Pelican Pier Marina in the Marco River, a quarter mile beyond the Snook Inn on the right side. If you need higher octane fuel, please see me at the lunch stop.
Dockage: The public dockage at The Esplanade is located along the seawall. The dock master will do his best to keep as much dockage open for us as possible but he cannot turn the public away. Some rafting will likely be required so please have lines and fenders ready on arrival. The slips are privately owned, so unless directed into a slip by the dock master, they should be avoided. Don't be afraid to show your appreciation to the dock master and slip him a few dollars. They are bringing extra staff just for our benefit.
Food: C.J’s will be serving us with a buffet style lunch and each participant will be responsible to C.J’s for their meal / drinks. The cost is $ 25.00 ( includes tax & gratuity ) for the buffet. Kids will be half price. Wrist bands will be given out as you pay for lunch prior to going though the food line.
50 / 50 draw: At lunch we will be selling 50 / 50 raffle tickets. Draw proceeds will go into the FMO student scholarship fund. Please support your Club, and the good work we are trying to do.
New FMO clothing line:
I am pleased to announce that we will have available for purchase at our Marco Island lunch stop, new FMO hats, visors, ladies v & scoop neck T’s, ladies tank tops, mens polo shirts as well as T’s in both long and short sleeve in a cool micro fibre material. Any profit generated by the sale of club clothing goes towards FMO’s student scholarship fund.
Communication: Inter boat communication to be on VHF channel 72. My cell is 239-776-0481. Anyone dropping out after the start should let me know so we do not spend time waiting or looking for you. Leave a voice mail if no answer.
Helicopter photos:
We will have Jay in a helicopter for the run to Marco Island. We have used Joe from London Helicopters in years past and he is very capable for this type of aerial photography. Since this run is free to club members we must raise some money to cover the cost of the helicopter. In speaking with Jay, donors of $ 75.00 will get a 12" X 18" picture from him and those able to contribute $ 100 to $ 150 will get a 16" X 24" picture at no additional cost. In addition Jay will deep discount his already very reasonable prices for FMO members on any additional enlargements. He can do prints up to 16" X 48 or even 60".
If this is something you are interested in and will support, please let me know ASAP by posting here or e mailing me.
Photo shoot procedure:
In order for Jay to capture as many boats as possible we have set out the following procedure:
When we start at 11:30 AM the helicopter will be about 3/4 of a mile downstream. I will fly the yellow flag on Team PREDATOR and ask that ALL boats stay behind me. I would be nice if we can form a Vee formation if possible. I will run at 55 - 60 MPH on a coarse towards Bonita Beach with the flag flying for the first 7 or 8 miles. DO NOT PASS THE PACE BOAT until either the flag drops near Bonita or if Jay gets your picture feel free to go on ahead. At Bonita Beach I will drop the flag and everyone can settle into smaller groups and run at whatever safe speed they may choose.
When we get to the Naples pier, I am going to ask that everyone stop for a few minutes to let the back of the pack catch up. We will then run as a group the last 10 miles to Marco Island. This will also give Jay a final opportunity to photograph any boats he has missed.
Just remember the following: It will be hard to get everyones picture if we are spread all over the Gulf. The helicopter will not chase after anyone running triple digit speeds. Jay's camera can't tell the difference if you are running 60 or 160. Run your boat at a safe speed at all times. There is tendency to want to speed up when the helicopter is on you. As I said, Jay's camera doesn't know the difference and far better to look and be in control of your situation. Also please wear your life jackets !! Not only is it the smart and safe thing to do, it will give the critics a bit less to talk about with the pictures being widely viewed on OSO.

Having been in contact with many members today, it appears we will still get a great turnout for the New Years Day run. While the date will not work for some, we should still have 25 to 30 boats.
I will start a new list tonight of the 10 or so that I am currently aware will be attending.
Thanks,
Bob
