I have 502/415's also, and if Merc says 87 is recommended then that sounds good to me. Since I'm new to the twin BBC world, it's going to be sticker shock no matter what I run, but 87 will at least ease the pain a little...

One thing I've found out in my limited use so far is that it's OK to cruise at 55, but it's 10X more fun to run at 70... there should be a smilie for gulp, gulp, gulp...

87, the only time I don't mind having black motors is at the pump.

500HP Carbs
87 octane runs good, clean transom.
92 octane runs good, black transom.

I stick with 87!!

With stock 502 mpi's you should run 87 octane. It will burn the cleanest and most completely and thus make the most power. Anything higher is counterproductive.
