I would go with option three. The 280's are the better choice. The 280 will be quicker and like Ryan posted they have a charging system unlike the 260's. The 300 is a lazy motor with long legs. They are fast, just take a while to get there.

300X's no question for a pleasure boat.
No mixing of oil and you can shift them on a good day.

I know nothing about ob's and have wanted to ask a question......what kind of fuel "economy" with a pair of 300's on a 30' Spectre?

34GPH on a 30AMT, High Test + Oil
"Economy"
What you do get is "efficiency" 100MPH+ with reliable stock power that you can hold the sticks to the dash for extended periods of time

I have owned a lot of o/b's (8) and still own one twin engine o/b cat. They are a blast to drive, fast and somewhat easy on gas. But I have also broke a lot of parts. Blown 8-10 powerheads and 7-8 lower units. They are not as dependable as I/O's are at 100 mph. Assuming you want a cat that will run 100mph. A pair of 502's will do the same thing and run a long time. A fishing boat O/B will run forever at low rpm and not surfacing the drive at 45 mph.

I have had two O/B cats, one with 2000 2.5's and the current boat with 04 300x's. I would take the X's any day of the week over the 2.5's. I had a lot of problems with my 2.5's and so far the X's have been reliable and fast.
