Are these two Popeye's connected??
1 Attachment(s)
I had someone ask me at Key West during the Worlds if the two Popeye's were connected?? Heck, I follow Offshore pretty darn close and I don't know!!! I didn't see this boat on display at Coplands parties.....
I know Al Copland use to race, but after getting injured in a snowmobile accident he doesn't race anymore... I know the Popeye's race boat is Dominic Visconsi, Jr.'s and it's a Platinum.......but I don't know why it's called Popeye?? Does he own some Popeye chicken restruants??? Or does he just like the Cartoon?? With such a known person such as Al Copland that ownes Popeye's Chicken and still ownes a couple of older race boats that are for pleasure now, why would you name your race boat Popeye if you not in some way connected??? I'm confused!!!!!!!!!!!!! #84 Popeye Owner: Dominic Visconsi Jr. Driver: Dominic Visconsi Jr. Throttles: Jim Dyke Boat: Platinum Engine: Mercury 2004 Sponsors: Visconsi Companies, Ltd., Effen Vodka |
Re: Are these two Popeye's connected??
He owns the Popeye's restaurant company as well as the Copeland's restaurant chain.

Re: Are these two Popeye's connected??
Yea, I know Al Copeland owns all of that...........
But why is Dominic Visconsi Jr.'s race boat named Popeye???? |

But why is Dominic Visconsi Jr.'s race boat named Popeye???? Good Question: Sometimes people ... Don't remember.... but Jim Dyke has been around long enough to know the score Don't care........ That's why there are boats named Jesse James, and Still Crazy.... even after the originals cost the lives of some great and well respected racers Have the blessing of the original.... Maybe Copeland...or King Features (Popeye's copywrite owners) .... gave an okay. Don't have a clue....... Sometimes people are Johnny come lately's and think they have something original... (If I see one more boat with 69 as their race number I'm going to barf) T2x |
Re: Are these two Popeye's connected??
Al Copeland's boats were called Popeye's. As in Popeye's Chicken.
Domonic's boats have been called Popeye. As in the Sailor Man. The two have nothing to do with each other. |

Al Copeland was able to lease the trademark rights to the cartoon character from King Features for the fast food business..... This is called licensing. If Dominick has no such license then he might have a sticky wicket. T2x |
Re: Are these two Popeye's connected??
I may be mistaken, but wasn't there a "Popeye" boat raced in the mid 1970's, before Copeland started racing? I remember a boat named "Popeye" catching fire and burning up the year the race was moved from Pt. Pleasant to Atlantic City, 1977? Was this "Popeye" run by Visconci's father??
Sometimes what we think is the original, is not.... |
Re: Are these two Popeye's connected??
Cool info.!!! Keep it coming!!!
|
Re: Are these two Popeye's connected??
Fun Home,
I just checked the "Bible", "Searace"-I was wrong about the year-"Popeye" raced in Atlantic City in 1974 and burned to the wateline. The 44' Miller Saccenti hull was driven by Dominic Visconsi. Although many think Copeland's "Popeye" was the first and only, according to Searace, it was not. :drink: |
Re: Are these two Popeye's connected??
Bobby you are right on with that!!! Open up a page of Sea Race and represent you Nostalgic person you!!! Nice way of exerting the real facts for once.
T2X, when it comes to boat owners and so forth in the history of Offshore I think Bobby might have you covered. As far as set up and mechanics tried maybe not but I love posts like this with old history. :drink: :drink: :drink: |
Re: Are these two Popeye's connected??
This is off the Popeye's Chicken website:
After several months of lackluster performance, Copeland reopened his restaurant as "Popeyes", after the Popeye Doyle character in the movie, "The French Connection." |

Re: Are these two Popeye's connected??
T2x mentioned Popeyes was licensed from "King Features", King Features is a subsidary of "King World "-distributors of Opera, Inside Edition, Wheel of Fortune, Jepordy etc.. The owner of King World, Roger King, is a summer resident of Bay Head NJ, several times Roger asked my friend an I to return his boat from Atlantic City to Manasquan,-It was a tough job returning someone's 47 Fountain with triple 525's-someone had to do it! :D

Re: Are these two Popeye's connected??
al doesn't own popeye's anymore. he owns the spice rights
& copelands restaurants as well as several other very successful businesses but no popeye's. the popeye's boat was bad ass last year in biloxi. hope to see them race again. word on the street is stan ware now owns the hooters nortech canopy boat. |
Re: Are these two Popeye's connected??
I thought I heard that Stan was possibly getting a Super Cat for this year and not a Super Cat Lite. I think he was supposed to buy the new Doug Wright 38' but that fell through after the unfortunate fire at Doug's shop. I think he should have waited for Doug's new 38'

Re: Are these two Popeye's connected??
Couple of recent shots of both Popeye and Popeye's boats are in this video.

Re: Are these two Popeye's connected??
T2x is completely right. visconsi's boat was named after his fathers boat, which was around before coplands. if i had time to dig up the local newspaper article and scan it in it i would.
But in the article dominic is interviewed and that was his response to the name of his boat. For you real estate guys his family owns major shoping malls and strip centers through out the usa. two of the big players to come out of ohio during the shopping mall craze erer visconsis and debartalos wich are afilliated with the sanfran 49'ers. |

Re: Are these two Popeye's connected??
This confuses me.
T2x is completely right. visconsi's boat was named after his fathers boat, which was around before copelands |
Re: Are these two Popeye's connected??
I was told that Dominic Jr named the boat after his Dad's race boat back in the seventies. A tribute!
DAN |
Re: Are these two Popeye's connected??
2Tx and halfnutz are 100% correct!
dominic's boat was named in tribute of his fathers race boat. And yes his fathers boat was before coplands. regardless, its time to get the rigs ready. C yall on the water |
Re: Are these two Popeye's connected??
I purchased the 05 canopied Nor-Tech. Al actually owns 8 Popeyes locations still in addition to Diversified seasonings which owns the rights to sell AFC Popeyes seasonings to all Popeyes spices until 2050. He also has Copelands rest. as well as several hotels and all of the Improvs comedy clubs. I will be running in Biloxi with Popeyes as my sponsor. We will be in Cat Lite. I am still intersted in Buying a boat from Doug Wright as soon as possible. WE will not use the Popeye cartoon character as our liscensing deal with King Syndicate is over. I raced a 40 Skater in Orange beach in S.B.I. Also same boat in Worlds for APBA in 03. I consider it a privilage to carry the name. Dominic and Big Al are both hard acts to follow and a credit to the Popeyes or Popeye name in offshore racing history. Just my .02

Re: Are these two Popeye's connected??
Stan,
Very happy to hear you will be getting to Doug Wright 38' still. Best wishes to you and your team in Biloxi!!!! |

what do popeye and popeye's race boats have in common
the popeye platinum boat name goes back before the popeyes race team was started. The two boats have nothing in common other than the name being similar. If anyone would like to know more reply back and i will give you all the details.

Buckpasser: Ogden Mills Phipps III
|
Dominics father raced a 36 cig named popeye #80 to compete against Sandy Satullos new 36 wide body cig "Copper Kettle" in the 70's.
