Powder coating machine
Lately, I have had tons of stuff powdercoated. Every time I want to get something done, I have to wait until either the powdercoater is shooting my color or I have to have a bunch of stuff then he'll do a special shoot. I was thinking, several of my employees can paint pretty well. I keep seeing all types of Powdercoating machines on Ebay. Has anyone ever used one of these. Any feedback as to how well they work. If I had my own powdercoating machine, everything I own would be purple!!

Re: Powder coating machine
Actually....they work great. Those $100 kits and a dedicated old oven are all you need. (Toxic fumes) Prep work is critical. I have had a lot of parts done by two guys who do this in the garages at thier homes. We have done about 50 parts that way. It is just plastic powder put on with an electro-static charge. Bake in the oven for about 30 minutes. No big deal.

Re: Powder coating machine
I spoke to Mike (Slingshot) last year on the phone about re-powdercoating the grab bars and swim platform on my AT. I would have used Mike except that I couldnt get UPS to ship the oversized pieces. Mike told me what was going to go wrong if I didnt get the pieces to him but still spent the time telling me what to look for and how it should be done if I brought it somewhere else.
Well he hit that monkey square between the eye's. :chimp: Every thing he said would happen (wrong) did. Because of that next time Im taking it to Mike and anyone who asks, send it to Mike. |
Re: Powder coating machine
Slingshot;
I had some valve covers done in permastar (ebony chrome) by the guy who says he does all Edelbrock's stuff. Looked great when it returned. It immediately started peeling. Also scratches if you look at it too hard. I was told it was not baked properly. Do you do the permastar? would like it done right this time. I may have to resort to chrome otherwise. |

Re: Powder coating machine
I have the oven which you can buy cheaper at harbor freight. The oven is about 50 degrees off all the time so a second thermo needs to be added. I am having one built to do bike frames which will cost about 2 grand. The cheap guns work okay. There are a couple of pro guns you can get for around $1500.00 for small runs. There are classes you can take in Ala. that run 3 days to teach a novice how to powder coat.

Re: Powder coating machine
Slingshoot since it sounds like you have a large shop they may sell it to you. Here one of the links I will look to see if I have the other still. I would love to get some of that stuff.

Re: Powder coating machine
I have a complete Bink's system (less oven) that we bought for a job that ended up going to wet spray. Spray to waste booth,powder gun, 3 stage washer, and sand/shot blast cabinet. Will sell right.

http://www.goodrichtechnology.com/ Go for it Slingshot. The finish is better looking than chrome, we just need a quality operation doing it. :D |

KCHOTBOAT;
For the Permastar, would a shop just have to buy material or would different equipment also be needed? |

TTT
Anyone here interested in bringing Permastar to the Marine World? All the links with goodrich are OEM sites. I used one of them with mixed results. We need a "quality first" operation. |

Re: Powder coating machine
Pre-treatment and curing is absolutely critical in powder coating. If you want true 500+ hr salt spray test results you need to alkaline wash, rinse, iron phosphate (or zinc phosphate)wash , rinse (3-5 wash stages min.) to get the part properly prepared. Our system is 5 stage and we get salt spray (form B) reults over 700 hrs. Curing is critical too. Remember if a powder takes 15 minutes at 400 deg to fully cure then you have to take into account the time it takes the part to actually reach that surface temp for that long not just set the oven to 400/15min. Good cure test is dipping a que tip in some xylene and rub it back and forth 50 times (back and forth counts as one). If anything more than a tint of color shows on the que tip it is not cured properly.

Highmark,
Do you do permastar? |
Re: Powder coating machine
Permastar is not exacley like chrome as said previousl it is an ebony chrome it is very similair to black chrome wch is a sweet look but if you put it next to other chrome parts it will look funny. There are only a few shops doing it and I believe some specialty equipment is needed. There is a guy in Newbury Park Claifornia named Allen who own the polishing shop he has a guy that does it. I don't have the # handy right now but if I find it I will post it later.

I would like the name of the shop you are reffering to unless Newbury Park is the same thing as Downey. The pic has the Valve Covers and Air cleaners in Permastar. Air cleaners were a little sloppy on the edges but much tougher. |
