Tech Question about fuel tank vents.
 

I have a tech. question for all of you guys. Should there be a check valve on the fuel tank breather lines? Luckly I have not filled up while on the water yet, but when I fill the tanks gas shoots out the tank vent before the auto shut-off on the nozzle clicks. If there is a part like this could someone let me know where to get one?

Fuel tank vents vent air in and out from the tanks. There's no such thing as a one way check valve in a fuel vent. It wouldn't work. Try to figure out the capacity of your tanks and try not to overfill them.

Definitley get a handle on that overflow. Some marinas are real PITA if that happens and they will levy a fine of thier own. If the DEP (in FLorida) see's one overflow like that, thier officers can slap a BIG fine on you for it on the spot.

The vent has to work both ways--especially as fuel expands so vapors can be vented rather than build up in the tank.

My fuel vent does the same thing sometimes. Try to fill it real slow when starts getting close to full.

I bought this "No Spill" gadget from Boater's World. It's a container with a fitting that fits over the fuel tank vent and sticks to the side of the boat with suction cups. If gas pukes out the vent it is collected by the container. When you are doen just remove it from the side of the boat and pour any gas in the container into the fuel fill.

Attwood does make a "Fuel Vent Line Surge Protector" it is a check ball that allows air past both ways until gas gets there and then it seals it off. They do work, I've added them to my last 2 boats and don't get any fuel out the vents anymore.

Here's a link to West Marine, they are more expensive there but I can't remember where I got them, you could probably do a search and find them cheaper.

Sometimes it's a good idea to leave a little space at the top of the tank. Often the dock's tanks are underground, and the gas is pretty cool. On a hot day, the gas can expand once it warms up, and puke out the vent. Guess this can also be considered a way to save $$$ at the gas dock??? Yeah, i know....nice try.....

just don't forget to take the cap off when filling - it can almost be air tight and air doesn't get out / gas doesn't get in. have a container to pour the over flow into also or a funnel to pour into tank, it doesn't hold the spilled fuel for long, big hole in back.
