Superb Horsepower from Professional Marine

Engineered by the late Doug Lewis and Danny Alvarado

Utilizing a custom computer based EFI Fuel Management System built on a 653 cu in World Merlin block.
  • Bore 4.565
  • Stroke: 5 inches
  • Valve lift: .670
  • Lifters: .937
  • Rod Length: 7.600
  • Wrist Pins: 993
  • Pistons: Ceramic and Molly Coated JE Pistons
  • Cam: Lunati
  • Rods: Corillo
  • Crank: Bryant
  • Valve-train: Jesel
  • Trans: Huber 1550
The engines run off of 3 fuel pumps that keep feeding them 73 psi of fuel.
One pair are in a 36 Skater
At 67% throttle they have seen 143 mph @ 4900 RPMs
They ran 200 hrs before a need of a rebuild.

This has got to be one of the finest engines I have seen to date. I watched over the years as Doug and Danny worked at perfecting this awesome combination.
The nicest thing of all with these engines was shifting around at the docks. These engines will idle down to 500 RPM and you can shift with not having to worry of a stall. The engine's computer system some how is designed to adapt for the additional need of some torque when placed in gear. It's almost like the engine never misses a beat when it is shifted into gear. Truely amazing stuff!
I have a lot of pics as well as the Dyno sheet for this engine.
Check it out:

Not at all...

The software for the computer makes these things so effecient, they actually get that amount of time out of them.
From what I remember, when they took them apart, everything look really great. Hardly any wear.....

What happens if you lose a injector and what does the computor manage.

They are NA engines so their life is alot easier then that of a blow motor. A blower motor, especially a roots blower has to work ALOT harder to put the same power to the crankshaft as that engine. Blowers take alot of power to turn(hence the way fat belt) Numbers like that out of an NA engine or REALY impressive and if you got the cash big power NA engines are the way to go. past a certian point it actually besomes more exepensive to make power without a blower then with, but the reliability factor is 10 fold.

I am not sure what was put into the design if that were to happen. Perhaps there is some type of a sensor in place and then it may go into a rev limiting emergency mode? I don't know for sure, but you could give Danny a call. I'm sure he can answer that for you.

I've run those things...and they are all Sharkey said...and more!

The most amazing thing is how civilized they are around docks and in maneuvering....they shift like cruiser power...and the torque and acceleration is indescribable.

Awesome engines....without doubt the best I've ever seen.

A great creation by a great man...and his great team.

They are set up to run High Test.........

There is a switch on each motor that allows you to run regular...if there is no high test available to get you home...... This detunes them and limits power and RPM.

Doug spent literally months on the injector mapping...... The prototypes were dynoed under load for more hours than I have ever seen in a development project..... Final dynoing and tweaking was done at Sterling's facility.... but Doug did the work out there as well.....

Who taught who?.... (Doug on the right.... Sterling's Mike D'annabelle...on the left)

There are some really trick ideas on those engines. If you look close enough, you may be able to pick them out... ;)

Here is a look at the main bearings after 200 hours.

Unbelievable!

The lifters were a concern and was the reason for tearing it down at that point. Everything else look as good as new inside.

They do make a lot of torque don't they? :drink:

And they purr like kittens around the docks even while shifting.

Rob: Maybe the torque curve is the result of the individual runner intake without a plenum.

The N/A engines are from "On The Prowl", aren't they? Awesome package.

Re: The Jersey Juice!!! Need some?

if they made a reliable 2000hp a lot, but i look at things from a dollar to hp point of view. those engines you found in the barn are bad azz and probably the trickest thing going on in the day, but reliablity would be more important than a few more hp to most race teams, did anyone win any world championships using those turbo engines back in the day? just like the injected engines in this thread, 1000hp each for 100 to 125k each, i'll have 55to 60k in my pair of 1000hp blown engines and plan on getting 200 hours out of them before freshing them up. new technology is great, but most people wont be able to justify the added cost of the cool new stuff unless there is a dollar to hp benefit as well reliability. just my .02
