What about the old aluminum ones? Id like to hear why they arent built anymore. I have heard that there was a lot of vibration problems, dont know if thats true. I wonder if any aluminum boats are available?

Here's an aluminum Cougar cat. It's an old raceboat converted to a poker run boat. According to Marc, it'll be at Smoke. That's a lot of rivets.

My friend actually races a 38' boat powered by twin outboards in England. They have a one design racing class.

I'll post some pics when he sends them to me.

Wow, twin outboards on a 38'? Interesting. Looking forward to the pics.

Got an email from him last night. He's running a 21' with a Honda outboard now. Looks like a nice boat. I've asked him to send me pics of his last boat.

Here's an original aluminum race boat that Lake Cumberland has for sale. There were a very few of these built in aluminum and the only two I even remember were George Morale's race boat and Al Copeland's Miami to NY boat- maybe it's one of those. I remember the Diet Coke Special being for sale a few years ago so maybe.

These boats suffer from the same problems that the 47 Apache have- takes 3 BIG motors to make 'em sing. In under 8' water, they don't run as well as a 38' to 41' with twins. Most folks don't want to pleasure boat in 10's and 12's so in the end, you're paying twice as much for about the same ride. The bigger payoff is around the docks at the bars- "mine's bigger than yours" and so on.

Plus, unless you're in Miami or Lauderdale, rack storage for something this big is hard to come by- it's not ecactly a trailer boat.

Lots of obstacles to owning one of these beasts. Six or seven years ago, the old Gentry Eagle aluminum Cougar 50 was for sale in LA. On a tilting Myco with Gentry surface drives- no power. It was offered to me for $25K. It took a long while for reality to set in on just how impractical a quad-engined superboat would really be.

It looks like a 38. I don't know why they aren't made anymore. They won lots of races here and in Europe, but they don't seem to be in the same business anymore. Their website shows some military stuff.
