One of the worst days of my life!!
3 Attachment(s)
Had to put my 12 yr. old Yellow Lab to sleep yestarday. He had severe arthritis, and a mellon size melignant tumor on his hip.
This was one of the hardest things I've ever had to do. He was truley a great dog. He loved to do everything, I could make a long list but what I enjoyed most with him was going on the boat, I think it was his favorite too. I would open the back door and say "let's go on the boat" and he would tear ass down to the dock and jump in the boat. When my wife was pregant he would not leave her side. When we brought my daughter home he would get upset when she cried. He also would put up her grabbing and climbing on him. He will truley be missed. |
Re: One of the worst days of my life!!
My lab is 15 now, has a couple fatty deposits and her arthritis is catching up to her, as long as she can do dog things I'll keep her around, but once the quality of her life goes, i'll make the same decision...sorry to hear...Rob

Re: One of the worst days of my life!!
My dalmation "Indy" died last June, a terrible day for me too after 17 great years. I still miss her every day, not sure if I'll get another dog, if I do, it won't be anytime soon. I feel your pain :(

Re: One of the worst days of my life!!
Ken -
Put our Greyhound down last year after nine years.....definitely the hardest thing I've had to do. Time will help but you never forget the good times - they are truly members of the family...in fact better friends than most ! |
Re: One of the worst days of my life!!
I understand how you feel. I was just thinking yesterday that my three legged dog is starting to show signs of his age. I'm sure he will go crippled early due to all the weight on one front leg. I get choked up just typing this. I just everyday try to make him the happiest dog, and I swear he is. Losing a pet is a death in the family.

Re: One of the worst days of my life!!
Ken,, so sorry to hear about your loss,,, My boxer just turned 8 last month and is showing signs of her age,, she loved the boat and I even took her tubing and jet-skiing... The other day I asked her if she wanted to go on the boat and she just went and laid in her bed,, took her down to the marina and she didn't even want to go down the docks,, :( :( Gotta love them for the time you had with them and know you gave them a great life...

I`m very sorry for your loss. I had to put my shepard down over twelve years ago and it still bothers me. I knew what this thread was about as soon as I saw the title.

Re: One of the worst days of my life!!
Sorry for the loss, know the feeling all too well. Recently had to do the same thing to one I had delivered personally from the birth mother & had for 10 yrs. Tremendous loss for all especially the kids. :(
Best thing to do is to go out & get a new one soon, thats what we did, takes some of the pain away. A new pup is alot fun , but alot of work too. |
Re: One of the worst days of my life!!
sorry about your buddy. right after i lost 9 friends in the towers, on my birthday, my black male doberman broke his collar chasing a rabbit and ran into the street and was killed. they truly are a big part of the family, ill never not have dogs. they are always there for you and always manage to brighten up our lives, and put smiles on our faces.. stecz

Re: One of the worst days of my life!!
Sorry to hear you lost your friend. I had to put my two previous Shar-pei's (a mother and son) down a few years ago, a few months apart. I think it was the hardest choices I ever had to make. Oh man, you got me all choked up just responding here. Anyway, I sincerely feel for you and your family. Went through one summer 3 years ago after that time w/out a "pal", could not take it. Told the wife I needed a dog. So for about 21/2 years know we have had that monster over there in the avatar. Take care, Tracy

Re: One of the worst days of my life!!
Kendall,
I am so sorry for your loss. Losing a loved pet is often times harder than losing humans. As we all share similar bonds with our pets, there is just something a little extra special about a lab. I don'tt hink there is an animal on the planet, other than a lab, who feels their sole purpose is to make you happy. All our best, Shane, Kristen and Zoe |
Re: One of the worst days of my life!!
Sorry for your loss. :(
I'm at a loss for words.....I don't know how I'm gonna handle this situation with my dog. He's only 5 so hopefully I have alot of time left with him. Great pictures!! Great memories!! |

Sorry to hear that Kendall.
Our condolences, Chris and Christine |
Re: One of the worst days of my life!!
Thanks for the support. I lost my Brother 18 yrs ago, my Father 8 yrs. ago, and this was no easier! My wife and I were present for the whole thing and spent an hr. and a half with him after he was gone. It had to be done and glad we could end his suffering. There are no bad memories, and I smile just thinking about him.

Re: One of the worst days of my life!!
the more people I meet (off OSO that is)...
the more love and respect I have for the animals in our lives. I think I've take broken relationships with women easier than the ones with the animals I've known. they ask for so little, and give so much to us in peace and comfort. :) |

They are family. Period.
We just brought home our first, and even when he is at full volume, Magnum makes sure he is under him. Usually sleeping - but he's always there. Sorry to hear about this. |

Re: One of the worst days of my life!!
PE .... I'll try to Post some Pics of "gator" my 12 year old Lab ... you would not know the difference in Appearence. He was diagnoised with cancer back in December and the Vet said about 6 months ...So far he has not shown any signs. He does have the Arthritus and I am sure you know what I mean when it hurts me to watch him struggle to get up . We have 2 story house and NO MATTER what he is coming up those stairs each nite to sleep by our bed. Sometimes you can hear him for 30-45 mins trying to get up those stairs at nite. I dread the day .... truly sorry ....

Re: One of the worst days of my life!!
My 1 1/2 year old chocolate lab snuck out of the house last night on my brother and was gone all night. I barely slept. I went into work and couldn't concentrate. Literally as i was reading this post the animal shelter called and said they found a dog matching my description. I picked him up and he got into it with something. Left eye is swollen shut, bleeding out his nose, left leg a little torn up and a few cuts and scrapes here and there. Looked like hell! Barely recognized him. But at least I got him back. Not trying to hi-jack your thread my point is they are a HUGE part of our lives.
I am truly sorry for your loss. |
Re: One of the worst days of my life!!

I am so sorry for your loss, He looked like he was one big hunk of love, the pictures with him and your daughter are priceless. I am glad to hear you smile when you think of him.
It was a hard winter for us, as Ian mentioned we lost both of our dogs within 3 months of each other :( At first I also said I would not get another dog but after several months the house just seemed to empty, so we found another little Yorkie to love. Give it time but don't be surprised if you find the need to hear the patter of 4 little paws around the house again. Meet Kirby he is 3.4 lbs and 5 months old. Look for him on the great lakes this summer. |
Re: One of the worst days of my life!!
I know what you're going through.
We've had to put down several of our friends over the years. The hardest was a cat that we rescued from certain death. He lived with us for 14 years. Our daughter, when she was little, used to dress him up, drag him around, wheel him around in a baby carriage wrapped in a baby blanket, and never once complained. He was true gentleman. In the last year of his life he developed an inoperable tumor. Still hurts to think about it. |
Re: One of the worst days of my life!!
Hey Kendal sorry to hear about your Lab
Drew Z. Ps wil you be at the NYC poker run next month ??? |
Re: One of the worst days of my life!!
Lost my 10 year old Golden Retriever Abigail last October. She loved the water, boating, frizbee, chasing ducks and scrounging for food, beer, and chicks for me at Put-In-Bay. Went nuts when I would pull the RV up in the driveway ... she knew we were giong somewhere fun! Waited on the step till I would open the door, then bound up onto "her" spot on the couch behind the driver's seat. She was a comfort nothing else could ever provide ... always there no matter what else was going wrong in life.
Couldn't even begin to replace her, but couldn't stand the big empty house without her, either. I was fortunate to find her a little sister "Ocean" 1 month later. She's 8 months old and 75# now, and I took her to Put-In-Bay for the first time Saturday. They are the same and different, but she does help fill some of the void left without my old girl. Still miss her everyday! |

Re: One of the worst days of my life!!
Two years ago last week we discovered in the morning our Lab named Jake died in his sleep. This was a complete shock as he was very healthy and the night before was active as usual. He was nine years old.
I called the vet when they opened that morning and made arrangements to bring him there for cremation. I had his body wrapped in his favorite blanket. I drove to the vet and carried him to the back door and the vet opened the door. As I started to walk into the building the vet said " I'll take him from here." That was when the reality of our loss hit me. I'm tearing up as I type this. I can suggest one thing. Keep his collar for the memories and reuse it on your next dog. We adopted a German Shorthair from a rescue group six months later and he wears Jake's collar. I hope this is some help for you. ed |

Re: One of the worst days of my life!!
These threads kill me.
I had to put my buddy down 2/15/2003 I held him in my arms until they came for him. He is cremated and sitting on my mantle. You will never stop missing your dog. But it will get easier. I used to fear dreaming about him because it made me sad, but a couple years down the road I like it. I kept his collar and stuff, too. But I don't think I could use it on another dog. I really feel your loss. I'm sorry. |
Re: One of the worst days of my life!!
Terrible news, sorry that this had to happen. Always remember the good times your loyal friend and you had and they will be with you always.
Chin up. Kenny |

Re: One of the worst days of my life!!
Since 72' I've had six Dobermans. Tanya, who died at 16 months from cancer of the lymph nodes, Pinta who died at 18 months from a heart defect, Jaus (my only male/160 lbs. German Doberman) who died in his sleep at 9, Karma who I had to have put down from cancer at 16, Sadie who died on the way to the Vet's at 15, and now Bernis the Horrible (named after my paternal grandmother).
After having my first one Tanya put to sleep, I broke four bones in my hands beating up my truck. In the Vet's parking lot. Everyone has been a heart wrenching experience, particularly Sadie who saw me through a whirlwind of life changes and was ALWAYS there. Asked for nothing more than my love. I'd trade that dog for any human being on Earth. I have the ashes of four of my dogs and they will go with me when I pass on. My back will be covered, very very well. I am so sorry about your loss and know exactly what you are going through. I know how hard it hurts, but take solace in knowing you gave him a very very very good life. Rest assured he is smiling down upon you as we write. Russ |
Re: One of the worst days of my life!!
I'm with you, it's seriously one of the most difficult things to go through after being such a big part of your life. We don't get to keep them long enough. I look forward to the Rainbow Bridge.

Jessica and I are so sorry to read this. After loosing Dodge our 9 year old Shepard last month I know how you feel. It takes time but you will never loose the memories. You have to be thankful for all the joy they give us and give them the love they deserve for the short time they are here. Its a shame that they age 7 times faster than us but they truly live for ever in our hearts.
The night dodge passed we found a breeder that had puppies available. Some might say it was a bit soon to get another dog but I beg to differ. Having the little pup in the house helped me get over what happened. I would of been lost with out having a little buddy around. The new pup is al ready learning to drive  |
