I tried this post in the tech forum with little resolve. I've had a problem with my trim pump and would like to know where to go to have it looked at/rebuilt/or replaced with new?

I've seen a few on ebay at decent prices...anyone ever try to rebuild one of these things? I am getting a "click" when I hit the trim button but no action. My guess is that the brushes/springs on brushes/and-or contact points are dirty. Any suggestions?

I have a spare
Only reason I replaced it becuase the new trim tab I bought came with one mounted on a nice anodized backing plate.
Was going to keep it for a spare for myself.
However with murphy's law, I will not need it until I sell it to someone else

Does it go in either direction? You can get a click, have it not work, and have it be one of your relays. To test that I ussually jump across the terminals with a quarter, wrench or screwdriver. If that does not work then you may have a bad pump. I have also however seen it be a bad connection for the power and or ground. There are lots of test to do. They can be rebuilt.

Find someone who sells hydraulic fittings and hoses, they should be able to look at your pump. I did in NJ and they reset the pressure limits on one and told me to throw the other one away. They only charged me for the one they fixed.

Lime Disease

Mine was doing the same thing it was only the ground wire up on the engine going to the pump. Cleaned it and no problems.

Thanks for all the great info guys. MnFastboat...if you want to invoke Murphy's law...let me know how much you'd like to get for your spare.

I've got a buddy who is a mechanic who can do some testing on it. The problem I had was I could hear the "click" but no action. I could go back and thump the top of the pump and it would work again (kind of like an old starter in a car syndrome I've seen). I don't know if that helps but I would think that if it was a ground or dirty connection that hitting the pump would not help as the pump body is separate (but close) to the connections???

Jon, you said that they can be rebuilt....where would you recommend taking it? Electrical motor shop or marine shop or trying to find parts on my own?

Time will tell...I just got into it and it's the brushes. They are worn down to the wire and that is why it's not working properly. Unfortunately Merc doesn't make replacement brushes/assembly (according to mercruiserparts.com they are no longer available) so I am taking it to a local electric motor repair shop to see if they can replace them.

I'll let you know later this afternoon/evening.
