Do Outboards charge their batteries?

I was wondering, do outboard motors have altenators, do they charge up their batteries?
I just bought a boat w an '86 Yamaha 200.
Do OBs from that era charge up the batteries or will I be bringing a battery charger down to the boat every week?
Thanks
Evan

Don't know about Yamaha, But Mercs had 40 amp alternators. I'm sure those are close to the same. Any dealer should be able to tell you.

Yes, they charge from the field coil, but it is usually only 30 amps or so, okay as long as you aren't using a mondo stereo.

I'm running 3 automatic bilge pumps, and it's raining daily, (Oregon)

You shoud get an onboard charger or maybe one of the new solar chargers.

If it's raining every day, what good is a solar charger? LOL!!

My old 50 Merc keeps my battery topped off. No radio in the boat, but I do operate the fish finder and a Minn Kota trolling motor off the same battery... never had it fail yet. It's an Optima though... don't know if that makes a difference.
