I went to two different Walmarts, Hires Auto, NAPA, Meijers...No one had any Mobil 1 20/50. I forgot about Auto Zone. I also see some of you use 15/50. What's the diff?

Is Mobil Clean 5000 a synthetic oil or a synthetic blend?

Mobil Clean 5000 is not a synthetic or synthetic blend. While it does offer high performance, the base stock composition is non-synthetic.

Redcap is gone...RIP

Goldcap has a better base with more esters (will handle more heat than Redcap) but much less ZDDP. Just add a small bottle of STP or Valvoline oil additive which are ZDDP additives and you are back in business. It appears calcium was boosted to help compensate for the lowered ZDDP. Calcium is a good anti-wear additive but it is not as sophisticated as ZDDP.

FYI...V-Twin has boron as it's anti-wear additive and it is equal or better than ZDDP. Redline uses a ton of moly and ZDDP and forgoes a true API rating. Amsoil seems to be reformulating and we don't know exactly what this means yet.

The real concern is if you use a conventional oil with low ZDDP...it just won't hold up nearly as well.

That makes more sense, different oil..... I guess the red cap signifies a whole new line of oil then. Any changes to the v-twin oil or is that still the same heavywieght champion of oils?

V-Twin uses lots of boron which is better than ZDDP...and it ought be at 10 bucks a qt.

V-Twin and Redine are still the big guns if you need or want them.

Amsoil was said to be changing bases to a mixed synthetic of sorts...who knows for sure...

Goldcap with a $2.99 bottle of STP / every 5qts still is a great buy though.

What is the STP and what does it do?

STP has been around since the 60's. It is a rather thick additive that offers viscosity stabilization and a lot of ZDDP. It used to be questionable as whether it was worth adding it as all oils had around 0.2% of ZDDP in it. Now that the new oil API standards are here STP is a good spend.

Adding back the ZDDP is not mandatory if using Goldcap and changing every 25-50 hours but we don't have enough data to know if the higher levels of moly or calcium will hold up in high-performance engines. In cars it probably is not as significant a consideration but marine engines have to tug a lot harder at higher RPM's for long periods of time and that's where wear is a factor.

Got an hour??

Here is the ZDDP story...

http://64.233.167.104/search?q=cache...pdf+zddp&hl=en

The article starts by saying....

"Douglas MacArthuronce said, “Old soldiersnever die, they just fadeaway.” The same could besaid for that “old reliable,”zinc dialkyldithiophosphate,a tongue-twister also knownas ZDDP. It too has sol-diered on for at least fivedecades as a familiar, effec-tive and dependable chem-istry for antiwear protection".......

...you guys truly have no idea haw significant the lack of ZDDP is going to negatively impact engine wear I feel...

the article is in http kinda of hard to read...the problem and bottom line is nobody knows IF there is a replacement for ZDDP. Probably stupid to remove it for the small impact it had on exhaust emissions. Very dumb ...dumb... dumb

Seems to me that increased engine wear would be harder on exhaust emissions, but what do they care, if you can't pass your emissions testing than you wont be able to drive anyways.
