300X Sportmaster Lower
 

Just picked up a new Sportmaster lower for my 300x yesturday. Last night when pulling it from the box it has a one piece drive shaft.
The ones that came with the boat are 2 piece with a coupler.

What is the difference? Is the one pices going to work for me or should I send it back?
Most of the drives Ive seen before mine were one piece so Im wondering why Merc used the 2 piece with the 300X.

Don't mind him. Steczy is just mad because he needs 600hp per doggy to get on plane and all of his friends (both of them) have to keep slowing down to wait for him. :(

Don't know the exact reason for it but I encountered the same thing with my fleetmaster cases. Originally they were two piece. I replaced one and it was one piece. Works just fine. I was actually concerned about the two piece the first time I brought it down to replace the water pump. I had never seen that before. So you should be ok.

dont tell him its ok.. tell him its all wrong and mercury fu-ked you again.. he is really starting to become a mercury suck ass.. flags and banners hanging all over the garage, bags, cups.. i told him if he wants to keep paying 300 for some zincs and bolts keep buying their t shirts and coffee mugs... i knew tantrum was a company suck ass, but i have to put a stop to this....

Now I have to hide the Mercury boxes from my wife and STECZ!

What I was told is Mercury went to the (2) piece design to simplify manufacturing and inventory. They built all the lowers the same and the top part of the drive shaft was the only part that needed to be changed for different drive heights. This worked well for the shorter drive height, 15,20,25. The taller motors had problems with the shaft wobbling and creating back lash. Because of the problems with the taller motor set-ups they went back to the original design....1 piece.
I was also told on my 20" set-up to not worry about changing out the (2) piece, that it was not a concern or problem.

Sounds logical to me, anyone know anything different.

how bought the issue's with the lowers splitting/cracking above exhaust port...was told its common and no big deal until it splits enuff to allow oil to leak.

Havent dug into the cracking issue yet. Your talking about the mid-section not the lower though arent you. Ive seen and heard the midsection do crack and its not a huge deal if welded, not sure if this problem carried over to the 300x's though.

just above where housing bulges and the prop shaft is under the cavatation plate...

Bernie yours is the lower. Mid section crack was on Daves 36 Skater the mid motor mid section was leaking oil out of the crack in the mid on his 300x

I have cracked a lower just in front of the forward gear and 4 carrier bearings on the RH case only but never a midsection

This is the first Ive heard of the lowers cracking.
Mid sections could probably be welded in most cases, the lowers however I wouldnt think you could. The tolerances have to be very tight.
Are you guys talking about welding the lowers?
