Shortest tire life

Ok, I want to see if anyone can beat my mileage for the shortest life span.
I just puton 6 brand new Carlisles.
Yes I know, they are already not the best, but if you would have seen the last set that had over 10,000 miles on them you will understand why I went with them. Besides, I did not want ot spend major bucks since I hope to be replacing all hte axles with 5,200lb and will need to go with 15" tires then.

Carlisles SUCK, I bought four brand new tires at the beginning of the season and walked the tread off three of the four by the end of the season accouple years ago. Less then 1000 miles. I've always found bias ply to last the longest. Atleast not blow out!! :D

Carlisles are pretty bad. I have a friend who had to replace 3 out of 4 tires (they were all almost new) They had less than 1K miles on them.

Re: Shortest tire life

Man...I don't feel so bad. I bought a new boat/ trailer a couple years ago that had them. approx 1,500 miles before the tread came completely off one. Went and bought 5 new radials that week.

Re: Shortest tire life

I have 4 Carlisles and recently blew out one of them. What is happening to these tires if everyone's having problems with them? Why do you think bias ply tires are better?

If Carlisle Rubber Co. decided to make condoms instead of tires....every girl in high school would be pregnant before graduation!

Re: Shortest tire life

There are several threads out there on the Carlisle tires. Around 5 years ago, Goodyear made tires for Carlisle and those are the ones that they (we) had trouble with. I blew 5 of 6 with less than 5,000 miles on them.

I went with bias ply because most of the heavy equipment trailers around here use them and if you shred a bias ply, you don't a have a steal belt flopping around tearing up your trailer or the side of your boat.

I know everyone has there own opinions, but from someone in the Tire business,, a steel belted radial will out last, out preform, have a better wear pattern, run cooler, etc,, than a Bias Tire. There are a lot of options out there, but the Goodyear Marathon is the best I have found.

I had Carlisles too, they suck. I know the tires did not have many miles on them. I replaced them with Goodyear Marathons and they are great.

I've got Carlisle's on my trailer... several trips to LOTO from Michigan and lots of trips to Grand Haven and I don't have any significant issues. They probably have 4000 miles on them or so. A little uneven wear but that is more likely the trailer and not the tire. Granted they haven't moved much over the last two seasons, but they still look good.

Ever wonder why they have 2 for 1 sales....they expect you to carry a complete set of spares! :D

Re: Shortest tire life

My personal experience is they all will last pretty well, going straight down the highway with proper tire pressure inflation and not overloaded. The problems occur on the multi-axle trailers, triple is the worst, and you make those tight turns to negotiating backing down the ramp or where-ever you make tight turns. The rear tire will "skuff" and roll bad. This can cause belt separations and of course, tremendous wear, judging by the skid marks I can leave.
I personally prefer the Goodyear Marathon radial also, but they still wear quickly.

Re: Shortest tire life

See now I have not had a carlisle blow out or give me any trouble. Tandem axle, about 7000 lbs rolling down the road. And I have to turn pretty sharp to get it in my driveway every time I come home, so they are not a "straight down the road all the time" tire on my trailer.

Re: Shortest tire life

Carlisles are the worst. I put a set of 6 on my old Cirarettes trailer. 1200 miles later, not one was left on the trailer. Most of them had the tread peel off like you see trucks do with re-treads. A couple of them simply blew out.

I've been impressed with Nankang tires! (Tire discounters) Had a bent axle that wore the heck out of the inside of 1 tire a few yrs back...didn't have the time to get it fixed so I had the tire flipped around when it was worn down flat, the other side wore all the way down into the belts eventually (got a little further than I thought) and the tire stayed together with belts showing on both sides.....pretty amazing! No problems with any of the others.....

Re: Shortest tire life

Yup!! What DJD said... It turns out that I got less than 1K miles out of the set... I bought the trailer with 6 of them on it and as it turns out, I needed 6 spares too!!! It seems that they don't like a load at all!! Only did that for about three months and bought new Goodyear's... Have not had problems with the Goodyear's and would highly recommend...

Thanks, Karl

I have had my Carlisle's since 99.. not too many miles, but last year at the end I noticed a large bump on left front.. So I traded them in two weeks ago for a new set of Goodyear Marathons.. Every time I asked the guy what the trade in value of the Carlisles were.. he smiled... I figured it was a pretty good deal.. a big ole smile for each junk tire.. not bad!!

I hope to be using those new tires some time in the future..

With the all reports of Carlisle's failing, why chance it to save a couple bucks?

I put a set of Dean Alphas on and they were the best tires I ever had for a trailer. And they were like $45 ea.

Re: Shortest tire life

Carlisle's are total pieces of shttttttttttt. I have had new ones blow out while the trailer is parked. Stay away from them.

Madmax 06-14-2005 09:32 PM

Re: Shortest tire life

Carlisle's might be the worst tire made. 3 years ago, I put 4 new ones on the trailer for our trip to the Ozarks. 1/2 way down, 1 blew, then as we were rolling into town, the tread came off another. Replaced them with some equally crap brand at a dealer that totally had me over a barrel, and lost another Carlisle on the trip home.

Goodyear marathons are the only way to go....

I happened to have my camera in my hand when I walked by my trailer this morning. Took these shots of my carlisles. These tires are 5 years old, but only have 3 seasons of towing on them. Perhaps 5000-7000 miles or so. ~7000 lbs rolling down the road on a 1987 Eagle tandem axle trailer. First one is the rear left, second one is the front left.
