Poker run oorganizers - what do you do for insurance
we have a boat club and are holding our 5th annual poker run fund rasierin Holladn Michigan on Tuesday night ( July 12).
it started out as our work boat club but is growing. we expect 40 boats this year.
who gets insurance for their events, and what is the cost, and coverage. Do you think it is necessary???
thanks

We call it a Fun Run and make sure our fun runners are insured properly.

YUP...FUN RUN is the key........Everyone who joins in is on their own if something goes wrong. No liability for the organizers. Poker Runs make money but have way too much liability if something bad happens on the water......Thank the lawyers for that one.....they sue anything that moves and will go after every penny you have if someone gets seriously injured.

we have some sponsors ( small items donated for the raffle.....i mean drawing )
i just worry if one of our participats has an unfortunate "altercation" with a non participating boat , what the ramifications for the sponsors, regardless of how minial their contirbution is, or the restaurant. or our club, even though it has no money, not even a bank acount yet........
thanks for the input, keep it ccoming

DON"T PUBLISIZE THE PRIZES....online
DON"T GIVE RUN DETAILS...online
Word of mouth at the dock or by cell phone....Kinda like the car ralleys.....everyone know the date and time but not the course or prize money.......cops and coast gaurd monitor sites like these for info as well as insurance companies......they hedge the event because of the big payouts lately. They say ok here is one of the guys involved....meaning YOU......then you get pulled into the courtroom to testify..........keep it low key and you'll be fine.
Your donated gifts are charitable contributions NO BANNERS or ADs of who they are ANYWHERE....because yes THEY ARE LIABLE TOO IF THINGS TAKE A BAD TURN.
lawyers are suck a*s SCUM.....they prey on stuff like this only for their own financial reward.......so low key is the word ....GOOD LUCK...BE SAFE....AND HAVE FUN.......BTW NO BOOZE until after the run ......if ya see someone drinking before the run .....boot em out and tell the other boaters who it is.

Have them sign a waiver, and brief thoroughly during the captains meeting that it's not a competitive race and any and all aggressive driving is at the risk of the owner outside of the spirit of the event and therefore they must except full repsonsibility for any foolishness.....as it should be.
