Re: outboard guru's
Never saw that before.
The second crack may very well have been a weak point from the heat effected area of the first weld. As for the first crack that was welded, dont know? How many others have you heard about cracking there? |
Re: outboard guru's
Now I see where you are talking about welding a plate on the inside (post#3), I would do it. No reason you couldnt. That will strengthen it vertically which is how it is cracking now.
I would have someone look at the shafts, mine were worse but it might be covered under the corrosion warranty. |
Re: outboard guru's
i just emailed Chris at Mercury's Racing Division all the above photos and we'll see what he says. He supposedly has an excellent repor with Rolf at ProRoc so time will tell. I've spokin with a few people and it isnt an everyday occurence but it does happen. Rolf said its fairly common and so did the welder i spoke with.

Re: outboard guru's
Bernie,
Post it on that skeeter killer site, Im interested to see what they have to say over there. |
Re: outboard guru's
its mercury, junk...... thats the problem...

Re: outboard guru's
I have had some lower problems on my 300pm in the last 4 years but not what you have there. Must be a casting problem. I know Philip on the board has had some cracking problems with his lowers. He runs a 32' skater with twins. I figured the heaver boat was over stressing the cases but now I don't know. Think about this... If the heat treated factory case cracked what makes you think a welded case will hold up? Best repair, buy a new housing ans install your internals. As Tantrum says welding weakens the aluminum in the heat affected area..

You know something to look forward to and it would also cover some of those holes you have in thwalls of your shop. :D |
Re: outboard guru's
Replace the case. If you crack it again you risk losing the gears and bearings from the water that will get in. Look for a used case on Scream n Fly.
|
Re: outboard guru's
well guy it isnt looking good for Saturdays Poker Run but i'll know for sure tomorrow. The guy attempting to do the repair was testing his own boat today...
|
Re: outboard guru's
its a counter rotation 20" sportmaster. having a problem finding one..
|
Re: outboard guru's
Bern definately repair or replace the case. If the crack walks it will take the internals.

If i'm not mistaken did I see your rig on trailer gettin set to be pulled out of Proroc around 3:30 friday. I believe there was a 35 Motion that looked like it was set to be pulled too. Hopefully you got the repairs you needed. If so enjoy the weekend down in AC :drink: Greg |
Re: outboard guru's
I am sure Bern will post later but just got back from his house and he is all welded up and ready to run in the NJPPC Atlantic City Poker Run tomorrow. He has everything covered now. Thanks to all of you that tried to lend a helping hand to a good friend of mine.
:drink: :drink: :drink: |
Re: outboard guru's
no it wasnt at Proroc this weekend, got the lower back from the welder at about 6, changed fluids in both lowers, installed and ready to rock. lets hope she holds up...looks like he did a helluva job. cleaned, drilled and glass beaded the exisitng crack both on the interior and exterior, then welded an aluminum plate along the rear between cavatation plate and carrier housing. if it holds i'm going to have him do the other one as preventative maintence...i think. Thanks to all who chimed in and if i ever catch ya at the bar I OWE YOU A DRINK !! THANKS AGAIN TO THE POWER OF OSO !! :evilb:

Re: outboard guru's
One thing about Cats, they are real hard on lowers.
Especially if you have a center engine... You don't need to worry about that... :drink: |

Bernie,
Hotboat and I were talking about where you cracked your sportmaster and I pushed it up to the top for him. Give me a call if you get a chance at home. Chris |
