4th July Damage Report ...[Pictures]
3 Attachment(s)
I was cruising about 2400rpm and the vertical shaft took a dump :( .There wasn't much load on the drive the motor only reved up to 2900 rpm  it took 2 hours at 9 mph to get back to the dock.
Take a look at the picks and see what ya think. Do they usually break in the area?? The shaft looks like it has a different color metal in the middle .A void? Its not really twisted that much. Its a Bravo one style drive Aftermarket vertical shaft. Thanks Rob  |

This looks like the only damage .I have heard the vert shaft usually doesn't break. We where taking it easy at the time . I have run it hard before but I allways wait till I get past peak torque before going to the wood with it .The worst part about it was I had people with me on there vacation also . wantacat Luckily I wasn't in the throttle much or it would of found the rev limiter  Rob :drink: Click on thumb for Big Pick   http://fapomatic.com/thumbs/54/ship_...tdrive_049.jpg |

Strip,I broke a max machine worx alloy vertical shaft last year in EXACTLY the same spot, right above the bearing race where shaft is the biggest, you'd think they'd shear off at the end. It sucks because the tiny bit i ran it after breaking sent metal thru every bearing,Smitty

Re: 4th July Damage Report ...[Pictures]
i did the exact same thing cruising 3500 hit a cruiser wave landed and the drive was broke it was a pain trying to get the broken part out of the drive
imco 2" shortened vertical shaft i am going to replace the other shaft in the other drive too |
Re: 4th July Damage Report ...[Pictures]
Strip,
I had a similar breakage a couple of years ago, a bearing went bad in the lower housing on the output shaft and tightened up. Did your drive bottle blow fluid out? Best we could figure was that I hit something with outdrive. Though I wasn't aware of it. Had been cruising all day at about 3000rpm with baby on board. |

The reason it breaks there is because of the undercut to allow the bearings to seat on the center lip, it creates a high stress point. If you don't mind me asking what do the aftermarket shafts go for? There's no reason why a better alloy couldn't be used for higher load applications unless it prices them out of the market. |

Rob, I know of a cure for your problem.

Yea it looks like they should put a radius there ,not the 90 angle . I had never broken one there before .seen to be a regular spot? I don't mine parts failure that much,I am use to that hot rodding stuff but if its a bad part or human error thats not acceptable  Don't know what its going to cost . should know Friday  Yea I hear ya Rik and Jeff.but the $$$$ Thanks Rob |

Rob We have a automotive test lab where I work so we get to break parts all the time to see what their limits are, which is pretty fun when your not paying for it :D Anyway, we had a 1" diameter shaft made out of some special alloy that we decided to see what kind of torque it would take :D so we put it on a hydraulic actuator and wound it up until it broke at around 4,000 ft/lbs  . I don't know what diameter the shaft is that you broke, but i'm guessing the engines wouldn't be capable of breaking this 1" shaft at 4k ft/lbs. |
Re: 4th July Damage Report ...[Pictures]
There saying thats a normal spot where they fail .The drive is 3 years old and had about 15 hours with the new blower motors .They said the Normal cause is shock not torque. Jumping it out of the water .When ya heat treat them it only goes so deep and it still soft in the center the reason for the different color on the inside . The new one is made of 4340cm and has a large radius now.I should be good now . :drink: I will be back on the water this weekend .
Thank you Dean at the Bravo Shop .He received it this morning and rebuilt it today and Ill have it tomarrow .Now that some fast service!!! :drink: Lets see what else I can tear up :evilb: Rob :drink: |

Re: 4th July Damage Report ...[Pictures]
Hydro hoist stuck in an extreme bow up attitude with my SC430 Black Thunder on it. Slid the lip of the swim platform under the dock. No damage to boat but I had to get it down. Knocked a hole in the front of the front tanks to get the air lock out and put about 10 people on the stern to float the boat out from under the dock. This is after two nights of no air due to a kinked water hose from the sea water pump to the condenser. Just another day of boating.

2 hour ride back was bad  We ran out of beer :evilb: We made the best of it and we jumped ship and rode with the rest of our Buddy's . At least I didn't have to worry about anything else the rest of the weekend :evilb: |

Re: 4th July Damage Report ...[Pictures]
Though it happened the Wed. before the weekend, it certainly screwed my weekend up, no OPBA Poker Run, no watching the races from the boat.
40th major skin cancer surgery, over (including internal) 200 stitches in the top of my forearm just back from my wrist. "Incision burn" was a bit(h for three days. Just now starting to be able to move my wrist. Sucked. |
Re: 4th July Damage Report ...[Pictures]
Rob,
Sorry to see you had a drive problem. Big torque equals more failures. Glad it was not a bad fix. Been busy lately, sorry I have not caught up. We have our local Poker Run this weekend. Not any problems for me so far. Hell I just jinkzed myself. We have a group heading to Key West in Nov for the last Off Shore Boat Race. You should try to get down there. Later, L |
