Should I tell him

Good friend of mine ( also an HVAC company owner) blew up his 502 mag a few weeks ago.
It is his first boat and he knows almost nothing about engines so he came to me for advise.
I sent him to my machine shop to get it rebuilt ( I just don't have the time to do it myself)
Unknown to him I had the shop clean up the heads ( porting )
It cost me $ 120.
I can't wait to see how happy he is with the new motor.
With everything he did he should gain 3-4 MPH.
Last year I did some mods to the boat that gained him almost
10 MPH.( The tabs were mounted TOO low and were draging all the time. I raised the ram mounting point and it brought them out of the water )

Should I tell him what I did ?

BTW he sends work my way - that is why I didn't mind the $

I'd have the machine shop mention it for you, kind of by the way attitude. Thats cool of you he should be real happy with the performance.. :D

Sure, let him know that you had them help him out, dont say anything about the money, or just say that , I appreciate you sending me business and I took care of something for you:)

Let him know...

He obviously needs all the knowledge anyone can convey to him about boats!!!

Tell him, but not until he achieves an increase. If he looses speed, say nothin. :) Leave out the money part.

Kewl thing to do.

Tell him that you hope that he doesn't mind... but you went ahead and had that taken care of. Explain the mechanics of it to him, so that he can appreciate it.

Then tell him that he is a good friend and that you were happy to help him out. Remind him that he helps you out and you really appreciate it that he sends work your way.

When he asks to reimburse you for the expense... tell him that you wouldn't dream of taking his money... that it would be so wrong in light of everything he does for you... and what a good friend he is.

Tell him that you were just happy to be in the position to do something for his benefit. And that you hope to be in that position again.

Then buy him a beer.

hmmm, i am both positive on this and negitive both
If you know FOR SURE that what was done is worth it, tell him
If not sure, keep it quiet.
I had a 'friend' think he was doing me a favor and 'tuning' a set of props
Well, he took away from what I had

Tinkerer, we could all use more friends like you! And you donated your time on the previous mods that gave him an additional 10 mph? Dayum.

Well the owner of the machine shop couldn't keep it to herself - so he found out.
He took the boat out sunday after wrenching on it all day saturday and breaking in the cam on the hose.
We had to adjust the engine because the alignment was off, prime the oil and set the timing.
He called me monday and said that he noticed a big improvement on acceleration.
He hasn't run it WOT yet.
HE is real happy with the changes.

OH and DYNO - If I had the time I would do your heads for you...
