509cid Whipple engine
I posted some other threads of a piston going bad on my engine. Its a 502mpi with a Whipple. The race shop wants to go ahead and bore the block to a 509. Looks like I'm fixing to get a little more performance.
Shop plans on calling Dustin at Whipple for a cam recommendation. I plan on using the stock injectors. Does anyone have this combo in their boat. I was wanting to get an idea of the horsepower that can be made with this combo.I'm going back with the stock heads in an effort to save some money. They were just reworked about 5 months ago. He said we might have to change valve springs with a different cam. Any input from you guys would be helpful. Maybe some cam help also. He does have a dyno faciltiy in his shop we plan on testing with when completed. Thanks Shawn |
Re: 509cid Whipple engine
I have 540 with 8:1 compression & the crane 741 cam. Works good for me. Not real sure of motor HP. Procharger did not send all the parts so missed my dyno time window & it was going to be 2 weeks before I could get back in so just installed in boat.

Re: 509cid Whipple engine
Here is my setup: Whipplecharged and intercooled
509 ci Gen 6 with J/E flat top pistons. Edelbrock aluminum heads. Intakes left alone and exhaust ports heavily opened up by Jim V. Crane 731 roller cam and Crane roller rockers. Stock injectors in a modified Merc fuel rail. CMI headers. SX fuel pump at 60 psi. Computers set on dyno by Tyler Crockett Marine. Max boost is 8 psi at 5400 775 Hp at 5400 Over 800 ft lbs torque from 3000 to 4800 The motors made over 800 hp at 6000 but I will never run them that hard. |
