You could always tell him to keep the drives, deduct the price of 2 rebuilt SSMs, and buy a pair of used Vs.

Here are two sets in the classifieds. Again, although parts are getting harder to come by, if you plan ahead and take care of the drives with frequent oil changes, it shouldn't be a bid deal.

What ratio does the boat have?

If you are looking at a boat with #4's make sure they are large propshaft #4's. If they are not nothing and I mean nothing is available for them. If they are large shafts you can still get bearings and seals but not the gear sets, and run the same prop as a SSM 3A or 5. There is a clean set for sale in the back of the Florida boat trader.

I think merc discontinued SSM Vs as a package last year. But there will be parts around for the IIIas and Vs for another decade.

How difficult to switch from V's to VI's? Because I wouldn't see myself getting rid of this one anytime soon

Thanks,

Re: #4 Speedmasters

I would like to "bone up" on my SSM knowledge as well.

1) are they still offering 3A's? I've heard they are not in production anymore.

2) I see there are large shaft #IV's and non large shaft. But they didn't change the name like the 3 and the 3a so the public knows the difference...Why not? Say call it a 4A?

3) Do the V's have the large shafts like the #6's and 3A's?
