As you know I raced in both classes, Production and Open and I still feel that the best racers were the guys doing the 6 to 10's in smaller boats. What is it about todays racing that they just don't go for the big water any more? I was toying around with the idea of making a spec 35 footer (think of the old Bounty Hunter look) with twin staggered big blocks...restrict the intake, exhaust and prop size....keep the speeds down to be survivable in the ocean conditions.....and then find a sponsor to do 5 races a year recreating the old race venues. Miami to Nassau ... Miami to Key West... Palm Beach around Bimini to Fowey Light.... St Pete to Key West.... Let the racers decide the 5th one..... Do you think there would be enough interest from a dozen people or so to kick it off? Charlie LS |

Charile.....Ck this old post...You always could made things happen !
LS If we have enough interest after this Bimini race, I could pull out the old molds and make a spec 35 and let HORBA handle the sales of the bare hull and deck to race teams. It would have that classic look .....the real question is how many would support that kind of racing? |
I just noticed that the Conspiracy raceboat has a glass windshield.

That is how they came from the factory. The first ones had none, Powerboat Magazine Special # 11. This boat was the first 35 ever made. Notice how he extended the bottom strake to the stern. Then they began to make small ones like Spirit, # 4, then they just used the glass ones from American Marine as seen here on Impossible Dream # 10 in Newport Beach. Later these were replaced with the stronger aluminum styles. |
I worked for Betty when your Dad bought that boat. I remember him asking Betty "what do you think will happen if I try to race it?" She laughed, and said it will proabably sink.

Do you guys in Bermuda remember this Banana Boat?
We have it on the site in the racing photos section: www.bananaboatco.com Used to be stored in my neighbours yard in Bermuda 2 houses up from where I lived when I was a young boy. I can remember the sounds of the twins when they started the motors !! Music to my ears and annoyance to the old folks in the neighbourhood !!! Boat was owned and raced by Larry Robinson. Unfortunately the guy who had the boat stored in his yard and raced with Larry in Bda was murdered in an ally in New York years ago. |
