Wisc. Poker Run causes Trouble????
100-mph boats worry slower Wisconsin sailors
July 25, 2005
ASHLAND, Wis. -- A speedboat rally in the Lake Superior waters of Chequamegon Bay and the Apostle Islands later this week is stirring up some anxiety among enthusiasts of paddle and sail sports who worry the event will set a dangerous precedent.
The first Apostle Islands Poker Run is expected to draw nearly 30 sport boats that measure 35 to 40 feet long and can reach speeds of 100 mph.
Jeff Rennicke, a board member of the Friends of the Apostle Islands group, said he's not against power boats.
''But these cigarette boats are too loud, too fast and there's too many of them at once,'' he said. ''The noise is going to impose on a lot of people who come here for peace and quiet. ... But the real issue is the safety of all of the other people recreating out there.''
Organizers said they'll donate any proceeds from the run to help refurbish Apostle Islands lighthouses. AP
What is this all about, it's from today's Chicago Sun Times....

WOW, this is not good for the first time out.
Especially if it is a Chicago paper reporting on it
I will be there, so we will see.
I will bet any amount of money that it will be a very orginazed contained event

Yeah that article was in our local paper. People are all excited because this year it is an ORGANIZED event and they are worried about speeds, too many boats etc.
Best thing to do is make it an UNORGANIZED event and have the same people show up. Problem already is that the local people up in the UP have the local DNR and police all set to monitor the event and issue tickets for reckless driving, noise, OWI etc ...

Re: Wisc. Poker Run causes Trouble????
Figures.....One day a year they want to have a poker run and the blowboters and greenies are whining and crying. "We don't like it so we don't want you to do it". Sounds like the "Lake Winnie" crybabys.
Hopefully they will have a very well organized and safe run and prove them all wrong.
The last time I backed my boat in a slip at the Hyatt, two little girls with their parents were right there watching me. The little girls were holding their hands over their ears and my boat is not overly loud, just normal thru hulls/wet exhaust. Anyway when I shut it down and began tying the lines, the mother came up to me and asked me "why does your boat have to be so loud"? I looked at her cheerfully and said back, "actually there are several tangible reasons, but the most important is that I like it like that". She just rolled her eyes and walked away. Guess I didn't do a good job converting her. As she walked away I asked her "miss, if you found my boat to be too loud for your liking, why did you stand directly behind me the entire time I was backing in"? I did not get a reply.

Re: Wisc. Poker Run causes Trouble????
As a fellow power boater, I frequent the Apostle Islands many times in the summer. BEWARE, this area is loaded with people in small sea kayaks and other small boats. If there is any kind of sea running you simply CANNOT see these small boats as they dip into the trough of a wave. There has been close calls already with kayakers and power boats. This weekend's poker run in the Apostle Islands is a recipe for disaster. Even I do not think this is a good idea.

You can bet a ticket if I can't be seen
guess guy's sitting on a carved log can run without any rules or regulations.
I even had to buy a 7.9" bell that I'll never use. Anything 39' or larger requires.
