Tell me about Chicago...
My company surprised me today by asking me to consider a position in Chicago. It would be a big opportunity but I have serious reservations about moving from Florida to anywhere North of here. So what are the opportunities for boating on the big lake? Do most folks trailer, dry store ?
You can tell where my priorites lie when I'm asking about the boating scene before home values and property taxes :D |
Re: Tell me about Chicago...
Lake Michigan water is incredible. Seasons are short. Nice city! Where at in Chicago?

Re: Tell me about Chicago...
Where in Chicago? What size boat?
Obviously, the season is short (mid-May to late October), but the lake is great (no Manatees, sharks or gators). Michigan side is a great place to vacation as is Door County Wisconsin. Dry stack is limited, but available in some areas. |
Re: Tell me about Chicago...
STAY IN FLORIDA.
We moved back from California to the midwest. I would not say we regret it, but I sure do miss 12 months of summer. Now I get about 4 real months of summer. |
Re: Tell me about Chicago...
No palm trees in Chicago, BUT your only an hour away from http://www.blarneyisland.com
Great Salmon fishing in Lake Michigan. And no MANATEE Zones! |
Re: Tell me about Chicago...
Not to discourage you but I hope it includes a hefty pay increase. It is expensive to live around here if you want a decent house and it's not 2 hours from downtown Chicago. I live 40 miles N.W. of Chicago. I have lived here all my life and I like it. But when my daughter gets thru high school we are moving west to a warmer climate. Just do your homework before taking the offer. I would be happy to help on this end. Just P.M. me with any questions.

Re: Tell me about Chicago...
GatorDave,
This is from a Southern boy, (40 miles north of Atlanta) STAY IN FLORIDA I love visiting my friends up there and my bride is from there, so we have family ties up there. The lake can get REAL rough on you in a New York minute. Been there, done that! I don't know where you are looking to move to, but I would suggest keeping the boat in Hammond where you can put it on a lift and they have 92 octane. It's only about 20-30 minutes from downtown and they have a casino boat there. If you need a GREAT detail guy, I can hook you up. Just BEWARE of the winters. Last Christmas, I was up there and the temp was (-4 F). TOO damn cold for my southern a$$ blood. I will agree with everyone that the lake is a ton of fun and you can go out and cool off in the summer and there's NO SALT, in the lake that is, on the roads in the winter though. I plucked my bride out of there and brought her down here to Ga. and so far, other than the bugs, she loves it. Robert[/SIZE] |
Re: Tell me about Chicago...
Thanks for all the input guys. The job is downtown so I know commuting would be a pain compared to the 20 minute drive to work I have now. The boat is a 25 Baja Outlaw. I've been looking for a reason to go bigger and it sounds like Lake Michigan would give me a good excuse!
I'll have to see how big the offer is and decide if I can live with a real winter. |
