I was just wondering if it is legal to tow a 40' cat on a tilt trailer with any truck other than a semi? We were thinking about getting a 2500HD and wanted to make sure it could tow it. I am not familiar with the towing regulations for cats and was wanting input on the subject since we are considering purchasing a cat (kind not yet decided on). Thanks

Yes it is....at the least you need a 1 ton dually..gooseneck trailer..with a very good breaking system on trailer...anything less is poor judgement..even then it is still not the best..you should really be in something bigger than a 1 ton...sway and stopping are your concerns.

If you have the money for a tilt trailer and 40 cat, be safe and buy a medium duty truck (top kick, freightliner, sterling, international) they all pretty much have the same horsepower (300) as the duramax but the brakes are bigger and it will feel more stable going down the road.

I have a conventional goose neck trialer. Combined weight of trailer and boat are 17,000 lbs. Using anything less than a dually will result iin the trialer constantly weaving slightly back and forth.

I have a fifth wheel cat trailer and was surprised on how much of a difference there is in towing. My boat, trailer, gear, and etc. is 17,000-18,000lbs and my 1 ton crew cab used to get jerked all over the road. Now it is 100% better. I would recommend at least a 450-650 for towing. Get the best brakes money can buy for the trailer. Electric over hydralic with a inertia brake controller or the new Fords have a brake controller system built in the dash that works with your anti-locking brakes system.

Don't even think of towing with anything but a dually. The larger the wheel base, the better. The extra wheels in the back keep you straight when towing. The dually has incredible resale.

Confused Yet ? I'm pulling a 39' MTI all over the Midwest with a Ford Excursion 6.0 Diesel...good trailer brakes a must , of coarse...will cruse 75-80 all day. By the way , the MTI is for sale

If you're going to spend around $65K on a tilt trailer, you should be thinking about an F450-F550+.
