Does Your Boat Keys Float ?

Have you tested your floaty on your keys to see it your boat keys will float if ya droped them in the water?

If you take the bronze nude mermaid off your key ring maybe you'll have better luck :p

Re: Does Your Boat Keys Float ?

I just tried mine in the kitchen sink. No go. I think they are too heavy. There are keys for the ignition, cabin, the lock on the trailer, the glove box and the key for the gas cap. Never really thought about it before. I would have been screwed if they ever went in the drink!

I have two "floaties" on mine and did test them, they float.

I also keep two magnetic key boxes on my truck. And that's ALL I'm going to say on this particular subject....:D :D

Re: Does Your Boat Keys Float ?

On my first boat, a Baja Hammer, it had one of those fancy molded-in fiberglass (read slippery) swim platforms.....On one fateful dewy evening while tying up the boat for the night, I took a rather comical fall into the drink. I lost my keys, wallet and cell phone. Since that time, I make damn sure everything is in a watertight floating pouch. And yes, the keys float. :D

Gotta check mine, got 3 floaties for 2 keys, plus keys to prop locks etc. Those Cig keys could be used as anchors

I've never removed the keys from the ignition of any boat that I've ever owned. 22 years as a boat owner and no "incidents"....yet!! :D :evilb:

I don't ever take my key out either. If someone wants to steal my boat fine. I'll call my insurance agent and then get a bigger faster boat! :evilb:

Re: Does Your Boat Keys Float ?

I voted "never tested".

Because I know for a FACT that my two 6 year-old orange Nautica freebies will float my three keys ( 2 Fountain, 1 Masterlock ) even in 6-footers with 30kt winds.

We are expecting 6-footers and 30kts later this week.
I will don my foul-weather gear, turn on my running lights, head offshore about 15 miles, and pitch 'em into the dark ( they are orange, so I will be able to see them ).

They're gonna float. I just know it.

Re: Does Your Boat Keys Float ?

Keys stay on the boat (of course they have to find them ). If they want it that bad thay are going to get it (not to hard to hot wire a boat). Same with the cabin if they want in they will break the door. I have seen many people have to drive over an hour each way to get the keys thay left at home. Hide them in the boat. Have fun

Re: Does Your Boat Keys Float ?

No keys for the Jag, just two toggles for ignition and two starter toggles. Now that is an easy boat to steal! Doug

Yes my boat keys does.................Does yours be floatin'?

Re: Does Your Boat Keys Float ?

So...how did you start it??? Mine never come out, just pull the teather and that will screw them up long enough. I also keep a set hidden on the boat, zipped tied in so they will be there for sure.

Re: Does Your Boat Keys Float ?

Haven't tested mine, but I have a friend that had a few keys and a gas cap key on a big Mastercraft float and they went straight to the bottom. He's on Lake Norris, so in the fall when the lake level dropped 40 feet, his daughter found them.

I think I'm safe because I only have 1 ignition key on the floats, with an additional small trailer lock key on one.

I hope so....and hope I never have to find out. Leave the boat in a hi-dri....key stays in the ignition unless we tie up at a bar/restaurant, then they go in the sink. :D

My boat doesn't have keys, but my cell phones(3 in July :stupid: ) don't float for chit :(

Re: Does Your Boat Keys Float ?

Keys don't-cell phone don't-Sunglasses don't-wifes purse don't-(bad weekend in July) I complain about a lake in Ohio only being 5ft deep but not that weekend, we got it all back. I took a spill off a buddies cruiser walking down the bow at night to the forgetting about those big cruiser railings they put up around those boats it is hard to just step off the boat on to the docks, I am sure it was pretty comical to everyone watching at the bar and I am sure the drinks I had in me helped out.

Re: Does Your Boat Keys Float ?

I've never tested mine either but I only have one key per float so I would hope they float.

Re: Does Your Boat Keys Float ?

They do now. The metal gas cap keys are too heavy. I had mine in the handle to the gas pump while I did something else. When it clicked I went to the back and they were gone. Fortunately the marina had a parts shop. We got the key number off the switch and they had a box full of them. I then bought a plastic gas cap key.

Now it all floats.

No key switches, so, no keys to worry about.

Well I just got back from my keyfloat test < see post #11 >. . .

By the end of the second night, I had used ALL my flares. By daybreak of the third day, the last of the icecubes in my cooler were gone. Word to the wise - there are certain types of jellyfish that you should not attempt to eat, and despite rumors to the contrary, urine is no substitute for fresh water, although it did help to reduce some of the welts from the jellyfish tentacles. Fortunately some kindly mexican offshore smugglers saw the flames and smoke from my futile attempt to hotwire my engine.
