Re: Twin vs.Triple

I looked at a nice used 42' Fountain w/ Trip 525 SC's and had trouble with insurance and reasonable financing. Didn't check with some of the high performance boating specialty insurers at the time, so insurance might not be as much of an issue. Financing was obtainable, but they wanted more down, a higher rate AND a shorter term. Wierd thing was none of them had a problem with another 42' I looked at with twin 500EFI's with Vortech's. Didn't make sense to me since the boat with trips was stock, but I gave up trying to make sense of it. Good luck.

Re: Twin vs.Triple

I find no difference in financing; however, it does increase cost/performance levels of boat so insurance may be higher. My experience is that people are generally uneasy about maintainence costs and fuel costs. Some hulls are just too big to perform adequately on two long-term RELIABLE engines; 45 Sonic/47 Fountain/47 Apache/ 50 NorTech. I think it's more of a performance expectation vs. boat size issue, when it's all said and done.

Re: Twin vs.Triple

I have a trip 47 Fountain, On that size boat I think twinns would not be good. But prior to owning the 47 I thought 3 x maintenence 3 x repair 3 x things to go wrong..... I think with stock power those concerns are not real valid now. My set up has been bullet proof for 1 1/2 seasons so far. If you were running big power trips I would still shy away.

On a 13K+ boat twinss are too small. I think the 46 Black thunder is just about maxxed out at 70mph with twinns.

One thing I dont like is the depth, The center drive is real deep and getting into nice areas to anchor and swim is difficult. (lake St Clair)

Re: Twin vs.Triple

triple 496 HO s are cheaper than Twin 525 and do not need more fuel - they put less stress to the drives in heavy boats
you get quicker out of the hole - if you want more power its easier to upgrade

Formula 419 SR1 came with Twin Hp 500 carbrated 53 MPH
changed to Triple 496 HO 72 MPH

Three 496 HO Bobtails are about 33000 US $
How much do two 525 cost ?

parts are much cheaper for 496 engines

I keep eyeballing this 46X Cig with Trip 575's. Gorgeous boat! The three motors make me a little leary though. I'm not sure how the handling and performance of an identical boat with twins would compare either. I don't care about top end speed as much as out of the hole and bullet proof motors. I'd rather not spend my limited boating days with a wrench in my hand.
