Ilmor MV-10's, how do they sound?

I've been impressed by what I've heard about Ilmor 550 and 625 Viper V-10's and I was wondering how they sound, especially in a single engine rig. I've heard a Viper GTS at the track with headers and race pipes and an Advantage with dual 550's and they both sounded very nice.

Does anyone have an audio file of the Ilmors or a video with sound of the V-10's running?

Re: Ilmor MV-10's, how do they sound?

I have heard the Ilmors and they sound real nice. I own a Viper with aftermarket pipes and it has a very hot sound at higher rpm. The only thing that sounds better is a high strung V12.

Re: Ilmor MV-10's, how do they sound?

They sound funny, no lope, smooth running and not very loud. I wasn't impressed with the sound. Sounded like wimpy small blocks. I haven't heard them at WOT. Only idling.

Re: Ilmor MV-10's, how do they sound?

They kind of sound like a UPS truck taking off...that's no kidding.

The sound is ok but more like a 5 cylinder than a V-10....but the torque is unbeatble.

It aint fancy tech stuff but lots and lots of cubic inches. With a reliable drive probably a great set-up. All I keep hearing are the words "Illmor Viper" and "reliability" in the same sentence.

Illmor is down the street from me..I have stopped by a few times...top drawer company and the reps say they are there if you need service. I have not heard otherwise.

Re: Ilmor MV-10's, how do they sound?

The firing order of the V-10's is completely different than a V8. So at idle there is no lope like a V8. I have spent several runs next to some Ilmor equipped boats and they sound good at speed.... but it is a completely different sound.... almost like a tractor, but in a good way. Like previously said, nothing idles like a healty V8 with a big cam though. I have heard nothing but good things from the people that I know with Ilmors, FWIW.

Re: Ilmor MV-10's, how do they sound?

Listening to race boats using those motors I thought they sounded more like an "Indy" car, as oppposed to V-8 Nascar motors. Of course this was when the boats were running at speed. Have not heard one idle.

Re: Ilmor MV-10's, how do they sound?

I was in Shogren's new MTI and was very impressed on the torque. As for the sound, my phone rang at 90mph and I answered the phone and had a normal conversation. It was nice for a change. The thing that impressed me the most is that the MTI only burned a 1/4 tank of gas averaging between 90-110 mph for a 90 mile poker run. Great fuel economy is something that everyone will like to have. With our gov't allowing prices to rise like they have been, usage of petroleum will continue until it hits $3/gal., which is right around the corner.

I think they sound better in the boats than in the cars. The 625s are snappier are throatier than the 550s. The idle is a little strange because they are so smooth, but at upper rpm they have a sort of wail to them somewhere between a V8 and a V12 just like you would imagine a V10 would.

I got a ride in the same MTI and was very impressed with the torque. The engines were very quiet at 100+. I think when I re-power they my be the way I go. Fuel economy works for me.

I heard a boat pass with (2) of them at the cumberland poker run last year and I though it sounded like a Ferrari. A High pitched wail as someone else stated.

Agreed. I can never get used to seeing a Viper drive by...its looks are dramatic, but the sound is not that different than one of those Honda/Mazda/Mitsu fart cans you see running around. Nice engine and performance, but the sound doesn't match the looks of the car. I guess it would be the same for me if I heard/saw it in a boat application, but that remains to be seen.

Re: Ilmor MV-10's, how do they sound?

Some of you are relating to the time a Dodge Viper went by you. The problem with a Viper is you normally only hear the side pipe or 5 cylinders. I own a Viper and will agree at low RPM on the road I only hear the one side of the engine. UGH... But, at 4000-6000 rpm with pipes it sounds like an Indy car. My V12 car has a wicked sound that even the Viper can not attain. I do like a lumpy v8 at idle. But the more the pistons the better the sound. Heck, some guys like the sound of Harley I prefer a screaming 12000 rpm Jap bike.

the engine is like no other, just got done rigging a couple in a 30 advantage, and have had a set of 625's in a 32 advantage and 550 in a 32 skater when i worked at big thunder, the 30 advantage will be here for the loto shoot out poker run, shoot out weekend.

A year ago I started a thread on Illmors when they came out..I was shot down...as usual for back then... :D

...but I WAS RIGHT....Illmor/Viper 625's and a drive to match them are reliable power from lots of cubic inches...

Can a Harley turn more than 4,000rpm???

Hmmm, pretty much the same cubic inches as the 525 and 600. And much more fancy tech stuff than just hanging a blower on a motor.. Not sure what you are saying Hydro? I do agree that the torque through the RPM range is very impressive. If you haven't experienced it, try it.

I agree with the comments that they sound like an indy car. Not as throaty as a V8 at idle. But IMO they sound better when get up to into the higher ends of the RPM range.

Re: Ilmor MV-10's, how do they sound?

I think what I am driving at is I like the idea of spreading out the power over 10 cylinders. The sound is fine..you just expect it to be different. All in all 625 HP is way cool.

Paxton has a kit for the engine:

Increases HP 40% and Torque 21%

That's 875 HP and Roughly 700 lb ft of torque.

My Father and I put together the first Viper engine in a race boat back in April 2002 ( Miami SBI race ) with a company called Natrix Marine from France. We tested the motor back to back with a Mercruiser 500 EFI and they were with in 1 mph of each other. At idle it was fairly quiet and at WOT it did have a unique sound to it.
Natrix Marine did not have an exhaust system designed like they do now with headers with the Illmor package so it would effect the horse power potential. The motor at that time needed more development but I felt with time and $$$ it could be a Winner. It seems that Illmor have done a great job on this package and they are now performing real well.

Look at the exhaust we were running at the time. :p Everyone would say : "Is that a Viper car engine you guys put in a boat". :p

Jo...an engine from France...did it have a rev limiter at 1500 RPM? French don't like to chance anything.. :D

Re: Ilmor MV-10's, how do they sound?

I think I turned it as high as 5800 RPM at WOT.The guys at Natrix are racers and run a Pantera 36' now in the P1 circuit. They figured it would be in good hands while doing some R and D on it. :p

I have the 625 vipers in my boat, but I have not heard them from the outside the boat, but am told they sound strange in a good way. I know that they have a nice lope to them at idle. The 550's were a little more stock sounding at idle. I do like the hum at 6000rpm. As was mentioned earlier, they are extremely fuel efficient for a 625hp engines. They are by the way only 505 ci
(8.3 liter)

I thought the MTI that Chi Town and Candyman rode in sounded awesome. Talk about a reliable combination. Nothing fancy-fuel injection. I think they would be ultra reliable compared to a blower motor. Just my .02 KS

I really thought they were bigger....they just seem to make power in an effortless way. The big problemo is trying to compete in a monopolized marketplace.....everything is bundled or volume contracted by "Big Blue"....they own or have a piece of many of the other manufacturing companies...

Not sure why you thought they were bigger. Not sure they make power effortlessly, but they are efficient and they make great torque.

Have you experienced support from Big Blue versus Ilmor in the last 12 -18 months. From my limited inquiries the Ilmor owners are hugely more happy about support than the Merc owners.

Again, that is limited input, and I agree that there are way more places to get Merc worked on. But on the other hand, personal care is personal care.

Quad  , 2 will be enough.

I think I will just push out of the slip, throw the hook out, and put the generator on. We can tie up at the end of the cove and retrieve golf balls for those that can't make the shot over the cove.

If they were'nt the same price as the merc 600 and had a konrad drive. It would probably be the best bang for the buck between 600-700 reliable horsepower, but still have to deal with big blue resale, time will even things out. I still think the merc 525 and save the 10k per side and get 550hp reliable, great motor and great resale, and 600's only run 3-4mph faster and have a blower and require premium fuel.

Did you decide whether or not to put a pair of 625s in one of your Nortech's coming?
