Noise Boats vs Bikes
Is it just me..or have others noticed that the laws dont seem fair! Motorcycles seem to be exempt from the noise laws..it seems the louder the better! Boats on the other hand have our dBa under the watchful eye of law enforcement. I boat on the Great lakes, and so far I have not been stopped. I like the sound my twin 502s make, but I do have mufflers available if need be. Any comments would be appreciated

Re: Noise Boats vs Bikes
AMEN!!! I love the sound of big blocks cruising down the lake but some of the harleys startle me in traffic. I live in an older neighborhood on a main street and there are 3 or 4 straight pipe dikkheads that come in all hours of the night and wake me up. I am going to take the muffler off of my Duramax and start doing late night burnouts with the edge on level 5 in front of thier houses. WTF??? I don't set the total advance on my boat motors on the water hose at midnight. :evilb: :evilb:

Re: Noise Boats vs Bikes
I know they crack down on our muscle cars in Ohio for it but yeah your right not on the motorcycles, but I am not going to start anything with those guys.-Sorry

Re: Noise Boats vs Bikes
I dont get it either. There is loud and then there is obnoxious. As in any sport, you are going to get some inconsiderate losers who run their equipment like that and in turn, ruin it for everyone else.In N.H.,I think the decibel level is 82 for boats and 106 for bikes.

Re: Noise Boats vs Bikes
The arguement is that the loudness of the bike keeps them safer because cars will hear them resulting in the car being less likely to pull out in front of a bike if they think there is one comming.

Re: Noise Boats vs Bikes
I have had rice bikes and now have a Harley and loud pipes do keep people from cutting you off. Or could it be my T shirt "cut me off and I will shoot you"

Re: Noise Boats vs Bikes
same way here , the local hangout on our lake is where boats and bikes meet, people around hear complain about the loud boats and we have to defend them,
but then you have a group of bikes leave and they get on the gas and you can't hear you own voice and the same people say nothing because the like the bike thing. |
Re: Noise Boats vs Bikes
I agree with the unfairness, but have race and rode bikes for 40 years. the thing to do is fix the problem not start a bigger one. For the last three years when ever I start my boat the neighber call thr cops. I call him and he hangs up. Last year some one turned me in for raising Hell to close to shore, the cops came by car to my house and by boat. They wanted to put me in jail. But I was not even in town ,My wife and I were at another lake doing a fun run. When they found that out they felt stuiped and looked stuiped . They try to stop me every time out it is getting old. And I had them test the boat in the spring for db and it passed.

Re: Noise Boats vs Bikes
We have a noise problem with helicopters on the island. Which I think is much loder than a harley. For a mere $1200. (one way) you can ride in style from NYC to the Hamptons. All freakin weekend long one after another. If your outside on the phone, the conversation needs to stop..its that loud! Can't enjoy a peacefull weekend in the backyard.

Re: Noise Boats vs Bikes
I honestly don't get it. Here in CT there was a sound law just passed that includes Long Island Sound. Are you kidding me...the Sound??? This is a HUGE body of water. Who is the person who complained and started this action? If there was a boat that was too loud for someone, all they have to do is wait a minute or two and it's gone. It's like putting a noise restriction on the Atlantic Ocean...gimme a break  However, some idiot passes a law that restricts boat noise, but on the way home they can get their head blown off by a bike 6 feet away from them at the red light they're stopped at. It make absolutely no sense to me. I do no advocate noise restrictions for bikes or boats, although the bike thing gets old after a while. The bike is gone in a few seconds so what's the big deal? Just because somebody complains, doesn't mean these idiots we ELECT need to do anything about it...sheesh.

Re: Noise Boats vs Bikes
Daytona too at bike week will have an aggresive campaign to pull over loud bikes...........Thats Daytona home of bike week........Its always the complainers that get there say...Everybody forgets the charitys and dollars spent in there town. Like it was said they go bye and are gone in a few let it be........I can see burnouts or reving engines at 3am causing a stir, but target that not db levels in the middle of the day.

Re: Noise Boats vs Bikes
I live in a beach town in Sw Florida on one of the two access roads to the beach. I can tell you on the weekends with a hundred or so bikes going by my place each day its getting real old fast. I have to have mufflers on my car and boat. so whats the deal with bikes? I'm not buying the safety issue crap. No help from the county sheriff dept yet. I guess I'll have to go up the ladder. Becoming increasing annoyed. PS not to mention the boom box noise from some of these cretins vehicles and the fart pipes on the four bangers.

Re: Noise Boats vs Bikes
Man I find it funny that we as boaters that produce a ton of noise are busting on bikes. I am not a fan but hey they do get your attention. I am sure that there are as many if not more people that hate the sounds of our boats..... I have a couple guys that rip it past my place in Maine all the time late at night. The cops are looking for him..... Loud pipes save lives is the moto and there is definatly some trueth to that. Unfortunatly it does not apply to the boats... Wish it did :D

Bikes... 150 HP on a good day... 20 MPG Anyone can run that.
If you have to carry your beer in your stomach, are under 1000 HP and over 1 mpg in a toy... your not really trying are you... :D |

Re: Noise Boats vs Bikes

Re: Noise Boats vs Bikes
Loud pipes save lives. 'nuf said.
BTW... The water cops in Texas don't care about load boats. |
Re: Noise Boats vs Bikes
Actually they are cracking down on bike noise, thats why I take it nice and easy going thru towns or when people are around. I'll be the first to say that my pipes are pretty load even with baffles. Believe what you want but I am completely sold that it is a safety issue with a bike. There are way too many people out there on the road just not paying attention.

Re: Noise Boats vs Bikes
There is not one single thread of truth that loud pipes on bikes save lives. The truth is that the most common car/bike accident is a car turning left in front of a bike coming the other way. No way in hell does that driver, espesh in a closed car with the AC and radio on is going to hear that bike until it's sitting in the passenger seat. Second most common is a car changing lanes into a bike that's sitting in it's blind spot off the rear corner. Another condition where the driver will very likely not hear even a very loud bike. In that case, it's the guy on the bike that has placed himself somewhere that he shouldn't be.
I agree the laws are biased and unfair. Texas has no noise laws for bikes. |
Re: Noise Boats vs Bikes
So work on getting the laws on loud boat pipes eased, why start trouble for motorcycles because your having problems with the water patrol. If loud pipes prevent one crash on a cycle I think thats a good thing don't you? I doubt a few loud cycles will ruin your life and if it is you should be *****ing about loud boats too.

Re: Noise Boats vs Bikes
I am sure that the people that are trying to crack down on noise from boats are control V ing the crap out of this thread. What a bunch of hypocrits we are..........

Re: Noise Boats vs Bikes
Everything that I drive is loud. No one is going to change that. But, I am as considerate as I can be in all circumstances. It's the few inconsiderate ones that bring all the negative commentary.
