heard on the news this morning a boat ran over another boat and an 11 year old girl was killed. Alcohol was reported to be involved, and an arrest made :(

Heard about it this morning on the radio. This is the 4th or 5th night time accident I've read about in the last few weeks. :(

08/18/05) BAY SHORE - A girl from Deer Park was killed Wednesday after two boats collided in the Great South Bay just east of the Robert Moses Bridge.
According to police, 12-year-old Brianna Lieneck was killed after her family’s boat collided with a Grady White driven by 33-year-old Steven Fleischer, of Bay Shore, shortly after 9 p.m.

Brianna’s parents, Frank and Gina Lieneck, are in Southside Hospital with head and neck injuries. Her 13-year-old sister and a friend were taken to Good Samaritan Hospital with minor injuries.

Fleischer was charged with boating while intoxicated. He and two passengers on his boat suffered minor injuries.

How sad :( My 8 year old niece and her friend are out in that same area with my sister this week. I know they don't drive the boat at night, but it sure makes you think. That poor family they will never be the same again

This is why I simply don't boat at night - not worth the risk. It's hard enough avoiding the idiots and other amateur-hour "boaters" during the day when you can see them, let alone in the dark.

Very, very sad story.

Very sad! I boat those waters all time!

Re: Boating Accident on L.I. last night..

People need to be more responsible when they drink. This is a tragic event that more than likely did not need to happen. If I'm going to be drinking on my boat, I make sure that I am docked/moored/achored and am not going anywhere for the rest of the night. Wouldn't drive a car drunk, so why a boat?

MD has it right here. Rules of road apply as rules on water. If you get caught drinking and driving a boat and your BAC is above the legal limit your DWI gets put on not only your boating record but your driving record as well. I agree with this; especially after reading this article.

It is this way on NJ waters .... I'm not sure bout NY waters.

Re: Boating Accident on L.I. last night..

Driving a boat at night at any speed that could hurt someone is stupid in the first place, nevermind the alcohol. I can't hear anything with my engines going at night or during the day, and what if a boat lost battery power and didn't have any lights. I do drive my boat at night down the river, but I rarely get on plane unless it is a wide open area and I can see everything with my big ass headlights. Other than that, I idle back.

Re: Boating Accident on L.I. last night..

Was almost hit in the same waters several days ago by a guy plowing along not paying attention. It was just after dusk, all my lights were on when wife saw him coming from behind. We were idling along about to go on plane. I yanked to port and throttled up full. He missed us by less than a foot. I can still see him coming in with my wife an I bracing for the impact. The guy stopped to his credit to see if we were ok. Knowing what almost happened - saying sorry just doesn't cut it. People have no clue what they are doing and no idea of the consequences of their ignorance.

This poor family will never forget this and that little girl is gone forever. How can people be so clueless so F-ing dumb? Knowing the consequences for these people doesn't help. To damn late..... My heart goes out to them in their pain.......

Re: Boating Accident on L.I. last night..

just heard on the news, his bwi test came up 0
and he was released......

I think it was a visibility problem..... Running lights dont cut it...

Especially in a very developed area as L.I.

Running strobes on the boat should help..

I don't run at night, because I don't have radar..........

I use to boat at night allot but always afraid that someone broke down with no lights and I could hit them(god forbid this on anyone).I will come in my dock still sometimes at night but I have radar when at night with a extra set of eyes with me(wife).I don't run at night if I don't have to but really feel bad for the family and the guy that has to live with this the rest of his life! God Bless! yes NY has the same law BWI & DWI are the same it will go on your drivers license

Re: Boating Accident on L.I. last night..

My last boat was a 42' Carver Aft Cabin - a big tall boat. I did not like driving at night, even though I had many many thousands in my RADAR system, a 9kw genset, and all my cabin lights on, including the flourescent 110v behind the curtains. The idiots still came way to close. And of course there' s the always-present cheap ass blowboater with no lights on, and exercising their "right-of-way", "racing with the wind" to the next port.
Certainly won't be running Plain Vanilla at night.

Too bad for the girl and her family. Hope they can work through it.

Re: Boating Accident on L.I. last night..

I do a lot of night boating at night on Long Island sound (25 years worth), and I always take it a little slower. What drives me nuts is the guys fishing by the entrance to Manhasset bay, or Hempstead Harbor who shut all their lights off, and only decide to put one on when you're right on top of them. Last night around 9pm, I ran into a bunch of sail boats near little neck bay doing their little manuvers. They were all over the place, and you could barely see them! On the way back into Manhasset bay at almost 10pm, I got very close to the "Dry Martini" who was coming out with no lights on! Real smart.

Terrible news.....thoughts and prayers go out for them!

I hate boating at night......very scary......in fact I went out last weekend around 7pm with a few friends that wanted to fish a little and I planned to be back before dark........well I wasn't paying much attention to the sun and it set......next thing I knew it was dark very quickly and I was a good 30 minutes from port. So we packed it up and started to head back.....all might lights cut out..........I about sheit myself.........something happened and the circuit breaker cut out........I had everylight and all the accessories running at the time so it must have been too much but none the less I was sitting in the middle of the lake with no lights nothing.....now I was really scared.......I immediately started to look all around for any immediate incoming boats.....thankfully none were in vision......I reset the circuit breaker and thank god everything lit back up......but it was a definite scare......after that I'm really second guessing going out at night again.........not fun in my eyes!

Re: Boating Accident on L.I. last night..

August 19, 2005 -- The allegedly drunken driver of a speeding boat that killed a Long Island girl was sprung without bail yesterday after blood tests found no alcohol in his system — four hours after the accident, officials said.
Cops still slapped Steven Fleischer, an air-traffic controller, with a misdemeanor charge of boating while intoxicated.

Police said Fleischer, 33, reeked of alcohol Wednesday night after his out-of-control boat wiped out the craft carrying tragic 11-year-old Brianna Lieneck and her mom and dad, Gina and Frank, who were critically injured.

But he refused to take a Breathalyzer and couldn't be tested until police got a warrant, they said.

From appearing to be intoxicated and reeking of alcohol to 0% BAC in four hours? This guys matabolism must be unreal........ Sounds like another idiot just driving to fast for the conditions. That with some alcohol involvement is a recipe for tradgedy..........

I am taking seven, 10 year old girls out tomorrow boating for the day. My daughter wanted her birthday party on the water. I will not even have alcohol on the boat, to ensure I play it smart. I can wait till later.. God forbid someone got hurt, and I had a couple of beers in me ..
As far as running at night,I actually enjoy being out at night. But, I believe" running" is the wrong term at night. I prefer to call it "patrolling". :D Nice and slow, and just chillin..

The authorities told the news last night that the DUI still stands because he was drinking earlier in the day and then operated a boat...

That will be great for his career as an air traffic controller. :(

Something about a New York minute.....

Fantastic job the young kid did though, using the radio, shooting flares, health card etc. Handled the situation better than many adults would have.

Too bad the kid did not have the opportunity to train the air traffic controller in boater safety.

Maybe I sound like a dick here but in my eyes, the driver of the grady white should be strung up in a public square and receive 100 lashes before his ass is sent to jail for murder. I know it won't help the little girl or her family but it just might act as a deterrent to the next brain dead idiot who thinks about drinking and boating.
