Formula 400SS with Merc 600 / XR package would work. That boat could entertain plenty of people, and still get up and go pretty well.

Magnum 60 with a pair of 2000-series MTUs.

Or a Baia 63 like the silver one below. Huge cockpit with a bar, only one cabin so salon is huge for entertaining. 2 x 2000hp. MTU, 16'6" beam and 72 mph...

Or an OTAM 55. They actually have an agreement with Cigarette and are marketed as Cigs. Magnum-like wave crushing with Cig image... twin MTUs or twin 1670hp. CATs, 70 mph...

Pershings may also be an option or an AB 68 with water jets (below)...

After that, if he wants something bigger and can accept to go slower, a whole world of Leopards, Mangustas, Jaguars etc. opens in front of him.

I agree Cat. He and I talked about that. However, I think that he needs to learn a lot of the basics first then go down for the course. Maybe we can fly Tres up this way to give us a class up in MA or ME?

There are a few Fountain 48's out there in that price range, great boat for the money, good economy with diesels, and will do 55 with 15 people on board. And they can sip cocktails at 40-50 in 3's. The 40SS is also a great boat, just not as expansive as the 48.

Problem with all these 40+ foot boats is his ability to handle it. I am having a hard time telling him that it is ok for him to own a 30-38 foot boat..... I will take him out in my Donzi a few times so that he can learn the basics with a small boat then move up.... Tell then he will have me drive it for him

Well,,, If you have been reading your own post ,,, your answers are already here,,, The boat should be able to get to the South for winter,,, Keep the beam at 10 foot or less.

The boat should handle a group of people ie: get the open cockpit family plan ie: 38 fountain or 38 formula SS or the new 405 baja

Keep the power stock up to 500EFI (Idle at the Docks)
Fuel Efficient

Big enough for good ride and small enough for him to learn !!

This type and price boat can be bought and sold in one year with minamal loss ,,, he can learn ,, you can enjoy !! then trade it up for the Magmum or Sunseeker, 50 Hustler or bigger Fountain that he really wants!!

Tell him this up front , so he knows the plan..

Have fun ,, RHC

call Hustler and ask them about their triple version of the 49 Esprit de Soleil. 3 x Yanmar 440s, Trimax bulletproof drives, ZF 2-speed trannies for great acceleration and it will push 70 mph. It has close to 500 gallons of fuel so range is huge. The three motors are mounted in a single row across the transom so this opens up a nice cockpit with lounge seating for 8 people and it also has an aft cuddy cabin so it will sleep four without any salon conversions.

And Hustler will build it the way he wants it.

Another boat that I was looking at was the Hinkley. They are a snap to drive. I would not even have to teach him. You just drive it with a joy stick. Insane boat but also very expensive. I think it is a lot more then he is looking to spend.

Check out how you drive the boat however. Click on the joy stick under motor yachts and watch the video. INSANE
