Scarab 33 AVS vs Sunsation Dominator 32
Both are 02's same price. This comparison is for a friend of mine and want to know the differences.

Re: Scarab 33 AVS vs Sunsation Dominator 32
I think it would come down to personal preference.... The scarab is probably going to be a heavier boat as the sunsation I believe comes in at 6500lbs. Will that equate to a better ride? Both are great boats with great lines. Did you check the nada value on both boats, which one held it's value better? Test run both boats in some rough stuff and get a first hand feel of how each rides in the conditions your use to running. Which cabin works better for you? Do the options vary? Wish I could give you more specifics as to why one is better than the other, but in my opinion they are very closely matched. I'm a taller person and the only negative thing I can say about the sunsation is it's not a deep boat and the head location was an issue for us. Otherwise, I think it's a great boat. Sunsation group are some great people and I've heard the service is great. As for the scarab, well, parts in the future can be an issue.
Good luck! |
Re: Scarab 33 AVS vs Sunsation Dominator 32
Big difference in nada values for these two boats looking at just the base nada values. And weight of scarab is 8400lbs vs 6500lbs on the sunsation. Are you interested in speed or a better ride? I'd be leaning toward the avs, assuming options and condition are identical on both boats. Just going by what info I have. If condition and options vary, that can offset the comparison.....
sunsation nada value $57,350 $69,100 scarab $83,850 $101,000 |

read the raving reviews of the 33 AVS...
PB tested it twice and were very impressed. I looked at them at the boat shows of the time, and watched the market on them for quite awhile. |

Buy a 32'(29') Fountain. I know where you can get a GREAT deal on a winter "fixer-upper"........... :D

That may also be with the base engines which are 6.2's. The weight is also probably with the 6.2's. Most are in the 80-90k range. If I had my choice, I would also take the AVS over the Dominator. A friend built new engines in the 900hp range for his AVS over the summer and has had it to 118mph. |

Scarab 33 AVS was the Powerboat "Offshore Boat" of the year in 2000 and the "Offshore Performer" of the year in 2001.

I LOVE the 33AVS - and I am a Fountain guy.
Don't really see ( this'll piss off Sunsation-types ) Sunsation as an 'offshore' boat. . . . my boating is exclusively Pacific Ocean ( with a nod to my Atlantic Ocean roots ) . . . . they don't like it **** 'em. . . Just don't see many Sunsations in Avalon harbor on Sunday afternoons. ( left-coasters will know what I mean ) . . . . |
Re: Scarab 33 AVS vs Sunsation Dominator 32
Actually, you don't see ANY Sunsations in Avalon.
I have only seen 2 come out of the Dunes. I saw a 288 bowrider come out of Newport harbor in 3-5 footers only to take a crest over the bow and turn tail immediately around. The other is a 32 Dominator. sweet boat and quick. He hugs the coastline and hangs around Emerald Bay. Never see him in the channel. If "offshore" is considered off the Gulf coast - go for it! I was looking into the 33 AVS before the Cig. I thought that it would be a smooth transition from the Formula 292. Same basic hull outline and cockpit feel, but with a stepped bottom. I felt that most were overpriced at this time last year. There are some good deals out now. I really like the boat's ride attitude and was up close to one passing me at 85MPH in the poker run. In the end, I needed more length for "true offshore" boating. |
