Arneson Questions...
 
Any idea how this boat runs with the Arnesons and which model they are? They look like ASD 8.

Boat looks like a 38 Flat Deck...anyone tried these on a Mistress or Cafe Racer?

I saw one Cafe, a few formula's and many other various boats with ASD 8's. I have a cat with 8's.

Arneson 8's are virtually indestructible. I can assure you of one thing, that boat with the right power will run like a raped ape in a straight line. Turning may be a major issue. Docking with staggered power, big motors, large props is, well, how you spell "beotch."

The cat is not too bad. You have about 8 feet between the shafts. On this Cig the props are almost touching. Probably have to dock it like a single engine boat.

Team Taboo is a 42 Fountain race boat with ASD8's.
Turns better, harder and faster than the six boats and bravo boats.
Docking is easy and we have 18 inch centers on them!
Just a mythe about the docking and turning!

Something I never really thought about with the Arnesons. You mention staggered power. With the arnesons, you really dont need to stagger the power to get the same prop\drive placement like a traditional drive\stagger set-up. That Cig is a great example. That must save some $$ on exhaust, driveshafts, moving firewall bulkhead, etc....

I see alot of these on step bottom boats and wonder how they work on a conventional v...like my cafe...

will I be able to get enough bow lift?

is there a propensity to porpoise with this application?

can I use a round-ear prop so the missus doesnt get skewered climbing out of the water after a swim?

cost for the drives assuming i have motors, steering and trans?

Whats the difference between chain and gear driven(cost/benefit)?

do I need to use a drop box?

Sean those are 1600 series second effort drives found on
mid eighties Hustlers aswell as Ocean Expresses.

Parts are very limited I know trust me!

Rik at Arneson has proved to be a serious asset.
Those pictured are chain driven and are not counter rotatable.
However the New Arneson ASD8,s are.. They come in various versions.

The above version requires a counter engine.
Various props are available with adapters.

They are factory installed on my Hustler.
It allows close prop shaft centers. which translates to speed.
as mentioned above you can run 18 inch prop centers with
side by side engines. This I beleave is not as good as a true
staggered setup ( You dont get the lower center gravity)
But you get the close props because of the 16 inch drop boxes.

The Drives are very fast and bullet proof!

Oh yeah,

High speed turning is excellent. Straight line is like its on rails.
In my application 15 feet of wetted surface at over 100.
Half my boat!

Slow speed S@cks period.

Around the docks you have to forward and reverse to get the
bow to turn. Trying to turn the wheel and going forward
will give way to wide of a turn.

My Pulsedrive powered Envision offers some similarities being a straight vee hull. I have found no greater tendency to porpoise that regular sterndrive powered hulls. If the drives are trimmed down too far the bow will be pushed down of course. Running larger diameter props allows you to trim up more. Other ways to pick up the bow include adding cup and turning the props in. Turning mine in really loosened up the hull. A slightly rounded ear also benefits bow lift. I know of a guy that put a Pulsedrive on his Cafe with good results. I would assume the benefits of the Arneson would be similar.

Kris Vogt is the owner of the Hull #100 a 1986 38' Cigarette Kevlar Flat Deck and runs 90 mph on GPS.

The boat docks really well and this was converted from a TRS with side by side centers to the Arneson's with a staggered propeller shaft centerline.

Most of this docking stuff is more urban myth than reality and a comparable boat with the same propeller shaft center lines and the same style propellers will have the same qualities when docking.

A drop box is better suited for a gas application over an in-line unit. This is why we made both models.

The boats you listed have quite a bit of rocker in the hull. These would perform very well with the Arneson's.

Round ear propellers are good for certain applications. If you need bow lift then they are the ticket.

Rik what about your rocker plates for straight bottom V's? Will they provide the bow lift needed? For a 40' boat similar in design to the 38 cig or 41 Apache?

thanks for the info. I go through this debate with myself every couple of months while i contemplate repowering options for my Cafe. I want it to be reliable, but I also don't want to kill the handling/performance of the boat since it was originally built for TRS drives...my hesitation with going with a 496ho bravo package is based on this theory...not to mention the fact that I know they'll be trouble with a 10k boat and more than 650hp when I decide to go there.

Adding setback with the Arnesons also concerns me...as does getting enough trim angle and being able to use props that are affordable and round ear for the reasons in my earlier post.

I'm curious about cost too...can you PM me a ballpark figure on the cost of the ASD8 drop boxes---one RH and one LH?

I agree, but somebody called all this stuff a myth. And around the docks, get out the extendable dock pole. I don't get embarassed when I have to do that. I get my peace of mind knowing my drives will stay together. I am only drafting 20 inches while idling and maybe half that or less when running.

However, even with these short comings I still love the Arnesons.

The 7M is what we make for a Catamaran application as the steering and such is different for a mechanical tie bar required for the Cat application.

Notched transom, what type of boat and what center line? A standard side by side on a V is not a concern.

Thinking of prdering a new 38 Staggered Fountain Lightning. What might I expect if I had Arneson 6 (I guess) installed? More speed, better handling etc?? I went to the sight, but did not find performance claims etc. I know for example, they are offered on the 344 Cheetah from Hustler. I suppose it helps there.... Would appreciate the help.

Spent a good hour with Kris on the phone last night.
Its good to talk to another Gear head. no pun intended!
A great guy! He exsplained what Possibly Tom Gentry had done to the 1600,s to modify them. What a good idea.
4 -3 inch thick Gears Dam!
He is going to get some accurate measurements. on the shaft spacing. He is also running some Hoss Round ears which he is very happy with.

I like the idea of running the counters in the drives
Gives one the option of having a spair motor on the floor.
Running Arnesons thats the only thing that brakes! :D

Awsome Thread Guys I Have Always Loved Arneson Drives My Old Man Had Them On A 35 Mistress, Most Stable Boat I Have Ever Been On...that Boat Would Fly Like A Plane When It Came Out Of The Water.....................blown 880hp Never A Drive Failur In 70 Hrs Motrs Where Redone 2 Times, Boat Sold Without Power Never Touched The Drives.....


They Are Pricey But The Most Dependable Out There...

Like WCMarine said the boat turns on a rail and around the docks it handles very well.
