Who can give me a little education in the differences in SSm#6 drives?

I will be looking at a boat with wet sump 6,s.
What to look for?

What versions did they come in?
What is the cost to convert to dry sump?
What is the versions of the skegs?



Please help.

There are 2 versions of the wet sump, the 6 and 6a. The later -6a- has a hump on the top of the outdrive. The 6a rotation is converted in the upper. The 6 is rotated/counterrotated in the lower.

All of the wet sumps from mercruiser have the non swept skeg. Herring can convert to a swept skeg for 5-7k (verify this number as it is from my memory).

The cost to convert to dry sump is approx 5k. Check with Weismannn or Cobela.

I've heard the dry sump is worth 7 mph on a cat and the swept skeg is worth 3 mph. I personally have no data to verify this.

Any pictures of the 6 from the 6 a?

Tying to determin what this Boat has. although I have
no pictures of the rear yet.

Do the steering tie bars mount in the same place?

The first ones where K drives, and the tie bar mounts on the back of the drive, with the newer drives the tie bar mounts are on the top of the drive. If they are the oldest style you will want to make sure somebody Good (like Matt from TNT)has put in the new style gears sets. Good luck 46's are awsome, I worked on one yesterday.Steve

I believe that mine are the old style (maybe someone who can tell will verify). They have been upgraded and converted to dry-sump.

Are you sure that the 6a has a hump on top of the drive? I thought that the "hump" was only on the dry sump. Not questioning your info, just trying to educate myself.

What year is the boat? That would give a good idea as to which drives they are. If they are 1st generation 6's, you need to find out how much time is "really" on the drives because, according to Matt at T-N-T, there are no more gear-sets for these drives. He told me last year when he did mine that I would have to "Do something" the next go-round. As in buy a completely diffrent drive or change the lowers. I have the 1st generation and the counter rotation is in the lower. Also, a little known fact is that 6's are usually only good for about 150 hours before they need a rebuild.
If you could get the serial number off the drive, you could call Matt and ask him which drive you are looking at, or possibly look it up at mercruiserparts.com.

He will let me know what 6,s they are.
The hull is 1994.

Trying to figure if its worth keeping the sixes.
