What does Pickle an engine mean?
When engines sink in salt water how long are the good for?
I was told they are ok for quite some time until you bring them up and then you need to pickle them immediatelyor at least within 24 hours. What exactly does pickle an engine mean? |

Re: What does Pickle an engine mean?
Thanks,
Searching the net I found... Pickling of a 'submerged' engine includes removal of the water in the combustion chamber ,crankcase, etc. and then totally filling and draining with a light weight oil to prevent rust formation of the cylinder walls, piston ring grooves, etc. ---- beware if the submergence was in salt water, especially if the engine was not immediately run to a 'hot' condition after pickling. I assume they mean to run it hot to burn off any salt and water..plus the oil they used? |
