What does Pickle an engine mean?
When engines sink in salt water how long are the good for?
I was told they are ok for quite some time until you bring them up and then you need to pickle them immediatelyor at least within 24 hours. What exactly does pickle an engine mean? |
Re: What does Pickle an engine mean?
fill with diesel fuel is my best guess

Re: What does Pickle an engine mean?
Thanks,
Searching the net I found... Pickling of a 'submerged' engine includes removal of the water in the combustion chamber ,crankcase, etc. and then totally filling and draining with a light weight oil to prevent rust formation of the cylinder walls, piston ring grooves, etc. ---- beware if the submergence was in salt water, especially if the engine was not immediately run to a 'hot' condition after pickling. I assume they mean to run it hot to burn off any salt and water..plus the oil they used? |
Re: What does Pickle an engine mean?
Fire the motor, pout ATF down the carb, when it smokes, shut her down. Pickled. Dave

Re: What does Pickle an engine mean?
I also considered pickling to fill the engine with diesel or kerosene.

Re: What does Pickle an engine mean?
Hello all, Pickle means to drain all water from engine complete, then fill from Carb with Diesel fuel to the top.
And I mean completely full of diesel fuel. leave sit for a week or two, then drain, remove plugs and turn over to kick the rest out. Install new plugs and start. No problem, I had two that way I bought. Ran perfect after that. But the gas tanks are Junk, wireing harness junk. fridge junk, interior junk, all fabric junk. Total waste of my money. Sold boat because could never get it rite. But engines where O/K because they where Pickled. Good luck. Kurt |
